It's out on Funimation.

So good to see this anime back! Joe's still how I remember and living the life of a fighter although he goes by the alias 'Nomad' now.

The amount of hype poured into the media can be a bit overwhelming. However, I think this episode felt quite real that explores the life of a fighter. Background scenery looks impressive so far this season too. I think even for just the Season 2 premiere, it highlights the rough life Joe and what he goes through on a daily basis.

Can't wait for more!

Wow.

You know, I was a bit iffy about this show, as the first had been such a complete story, but now I'm sold.
Clearly something bad went down in the interstitial which we don't know all the facts about yet, that made 'gearless' Joe don his gear and under the name of Nomad take part in underground fights.

While the first series was a cocky young thing wanting to make a name for himself, this is the down on his luck Joe fighting because it's the only thing he can do, propped up by 35mm film canisters full of painkillers from a dealer.

An outstanding first episode which really sold the show to me. Wow.

foxbox360 2021-04-04 16:15

Looks like Joe's coach is dead since he having hallucinations of him because of the painkillers. It really crushed him to go back to the underground rings or something else did it.

My most anticipated show for the season and it delivers. I was a bit concerned about how they were going to develop the storyline for the sequel and a bit apprehensive. This first episode of Season 2 has me excited again.

Kanon 2021-04-04 18:03

I see they kept the visuals exactly the same, including the whole "sub-HD" aspect.

Coach being dead is obvious, but for Joe to have sunk this low and be plagued with hallucinations of him, he must have been responsible somehow. This is another nice spin on Ashita no Joe's original story. Speaking of which, the wolf dying in the first episode was extremely foreboding. Yuri was able to avoid Rikiishi's fate, but I doubt Joe will be able to avoid that of his namesake.

By the way, what does the new ending text say? It wasn't translated. Even the song wasn't translated despite the fact the anime provided a Japanese translation.

Wandering Soul 2021-04-04 18:39

Coach is clearly dead, but there is more to it than that considering how low Joe has sunken. We know he also lost to one of Yuri's students but there is no doubt more we don't know yet.

Joe burying the wolf was a clear reference to the first series and a nice scene in and of itself. Hopefully, it wasn't foreshadowing for Joe's own fate.

I was split about this series before as the first one was wrapped nicely, but I'm on board now.

Master_Yoma 2021-04-04 20:43

Joe really falling far addicted to painkillers and washing them down with booze not really a good combination but at less he not taking dives

Guardian Enzo 2021-04-04 20:47

I apologize for ever doubting.

magnumcyclonex 2021-04-05 14:36

Oh man, how the mighty has fallen. Episode one gave me Wolverine vibes and the anime has taken a Latin twist/theme.

Wait, what? Coach is dead? How? When? 5 years ago?

So happy to see Gearless Joe back on my screen. A new, gritty, and dark story to unfold this season.

Someone on reddit made a rough translation of the song and I'm assuming that's what the ending text say.

Spoiler for ED lyrics:

Thanks!

That sounds positive, doesn't it? Or am I really bad at reading between the lines?

Blaat 2021-04-06 15:08

It does sound positive, I suppose the most negative thing is the "he won't come back" which at least implies Joe won't settle down in a place.

Alchemist007 2021-04-07 01:06

Hell of a direction to take the 2nd season. First season took an arc out of Ashita no Joe and ended it differently, this season seems to be going with a slightly more modern take with painkillers. Very cool for a first episode.

grecefar 2021-04-07 14:15

I like the beard and this chapter was really good, but I'm sad about coach and how low joe has fallen, this is going to be hard ride.

Psyco Diver 2021-04-08 08:12

I'm feeling a Rocky III vibe going on, manager does, he loses big match, crashes and burns, meets someone that believes in him, builds back up into a better fighter, wins championship then screams Adrian at the end lol
