Ozuma (New Leiji Matsumoto show)

Very hyped for a new Leiji Matsumoto work which begins mid March, 6 episodes long.

Summary:
Quote:

In the far future, the elevated irradiation from the sun has destroyed the environment of the earth and the birthrate of humans has drastically decreased. The government controls society with an army of cloned soldiers called "Ideal Children (IC)". Sam Coin is a trader in a desert. One day, he saves a beautiful woman Maya, who has been chased by Theseus, a corps of IC. He shelters her in his trade ship, but the destroyers of Theseus surround Sam and Maya.
Matsumoto created the plot back in the 1980s, and is finally being animated this year. It'll be the 20th anniversary project of the WOWOW television channel.

Plenty of hype. I've grown up with Leiji's shows, so i can't wait for Ozuma to start.

Since 1980?! Damn, I'll expect something from this one.

MeoTwister5 2012-02-27 10:38

Surprised he isn't retiring. He's almost as old as my grandfather. :p

But still, Leiji Matsumoto, the father of the Japanese space opera.

Only 6 episodes?

Well yeah I defintely want to see this one. Hoping it will get a legal stream somewhere.

I saw this image on TV Tropes the other day and was like, "Wait, why are they including an '80s anime in the spring 2011 lineup?

He's one of my fave directors/authors. Galaxy Express 999, Space Battleship Yamato, Captain Harlock, Interstellar 5555. The guy has unique art, a very chilling yet hopeful take on space and some very in-depth looks at humanity, morality and the future. I look forward to this.

I don't see the Queen Millennia movie on that list. Must watch for every Leiji fan.

So is a ride from Asakusa to Odaiba on the Himiko, the ferry he designed.

I'm waiting for his other project for the Chō Jikū Senkan Mahoroba.

Looks like Crunchyroll will be streaming the series.

Brilliant news.

I was going to ask how this series was....it is only six episodes long.

I usually like Matsumoto stories.

Great news indeed. I'm adding this series to my watchlist(which now has 5 for Spring). I also have Galaxy Express 999 and Captain Harlock in my backlog to finish(I have seen 6 episodes of both). Matsumoto is a genius, no doubt about that.

The series is also being streamed by a site called Viki (which apparently uses crowd sourced translations), although with CR streaming it worldwide I suspect that's where most of us will be watching.

Ok I'm going to check this one out. If CR is trying for a Saturday morning SciFi block, that is quite fine by me.

By the way, is it known why Ozuma is only being animated now?

Ithekro 2012-03-16 20:22

Anniversary for the TV station?
That Yamato will be coming out in April?

That is sets up the next big project?

Something like that?

Or maybe Matsumoto is feeling his age?

animekritik 2012-03-17 13:17

Ep 01 was good, much better than I expected :D

leokiko 2012-03-17 13:44

Just as expected for me. Nothing insanely great, but old school at it's best.

Kirarakim 2012-03-17 14:37

I am ashamed to admit that besides a couple episodes of Harlock I have not seen any of the Leiji Matsumoto series. However I do like old school series so I am glad I checked this out.

Honestly I thought the first episode was fantastic. Or maybe it just felt like a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of anime today.

I was impressed with the characters: they all looked and acted uniquely. And just in the first episode we were introduced to some great female characters. I loved the captain especially.

And fangirl mode on but I love the look of the male character on the other ship. He had just an all around cool appearance.

I guess my only worry is I hope they can tell a good enough story with enough development in 6 episodes. But I am definitely in. I just hope more people check this out, enthusiasm seems low.

ars89 2012-03-17 16:25

That was better than expected, too bad its only 6 eps.

Blaat 2012-03-17 17:23

I enjoyed the episode I'll never get tired of Leiji Matsumoto's character designs, especially the female ones.

Also some personal advice to Sam, if you want to catch an Ozma use a thumper and two hooks, duh. Also wear a wetsuit, you're wasting precious water. I also wonder if he's going to have twins with one of them merging with an Ozma?
Okay I'll stop now before it gets out of hand. ;D

6 episodes? That's a crime!
