Toonami is back?

or is this some April Fools joke from the jerks who start those dumb shows.

Last night during adult swim they showed toonami, Bleach, dbz, tenchi muyo and a few others.

this is either the best thing they've done in years or their huge douche bags.

Two words:

April Fools!

Actually, from what I've heard it may not be an April Fools joke. Adult swim may have aired it planning to see if the ratings were good, and if they weren't, laughed it off as a joke. But since the ratings were REALLY high last night, I'm pretty sure they'll bring it back... at least I hope so.

Magin 2012-04-01 13:21

See, that's the thing- it's April First, and Obvious Prank is Obvious. But, I'm hearing a lot of rumor that if enough people push for this, it might go from being a prank to being reality... unless of course the executives at [AS] are really going to ignore the fact that they've probably had more viewership due to that than they've had in years and still keep it as a prank. Which, from what I understand about who's running the show, is a very high possibility.

FaiEatsRainbows 2012-04-01 13:25

You do have a point. If they were smart, they would keep it. Their ratings have been the highest in years because of it. I guess we won't find out until next Saturday, though.

Magin 2012-04-01 13:33

Let's just say that I'm not getting my hopes up... not to mention that if I want to be an ass and rain on everyone's parade, there's no way this could technically be more than a "promotional night", since CN lost rights to a few of these shows and would have to spend more money to get said rights back. Then comes the issue that once you do the 26 episodes of the majority of the shows (DBZ and GW, and possibly Blue Sub 6 being the exceptions)... what then? Admittedly, all this stuff was aired so long ago that there's probably more than enough stuff currently to be put on, but anime like Outlaw Star, Trigun, etc. that was made to cater to Western fans just isn't being produced anymore in Japan (instead everything's becoming set in a high school).

Still... I'm guessing that even if most of us have seen all the episodes for the series they aired, I'm willing to bet that we'd all keep tuning in anyways if they brought this back permanently.

Dilla 2012-04-01 13:34

The ratings won't stay that high since it was due to Ultra-nostalgia. If they show same old re-runs, it'll probably die pretty quickly, probably within a couple of weeks. I myself owned almost all those shows on DVD/Blu-ray and they're also available on Netflix (most of them, anyway).

Endless Soul 2012-04-01 13:35

They're not showing "The Room" again, are they?

Of course the ratings won't stay that high, but it at least gives it a chance that they may keep it. Personally I'd much rather have Old Toonami re-runs instead of Bleach and Kekkaishi. That may just be me though.

Good point, and one that I was thinking about myself, since the only reason why this probably worked as an April Fool's is because it's stuff we haven't seen in around a decade. But since it's all out in DVD, I'm betting that a lot of people already bought the sets, and this was just a reminder of the good ole days. The problem comes in trying to acquire new anime for CN to show...

This all the way. CN has been showing the same thing over and over again for years. The newest thing they got was Durarara, but even that is playing reruns now.

SRanger 2012-04-01 15:21

'Space..'
Man those promos sent chills down my spine.

Anyways, I believe it was just an April Fool's joke, but also to gauge interest. Steve Blum said he only voiced for this particular day, so they don't have anything else lined up...but..

http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/feedback/

go to the toonami section, let them know how you feel.

Lost Cause 2012-04-01 15:56

Yeah, I saw this too, and damn near had a coniption! About the only thing I watch on there is DURARARA as it is new, but when I saw Tenchi, Gundam Wing, and that they would be showing Blue Submarine No. 6 I just camped out on the sofa and relished in the moment!
I hope they do bring back Toonami even if it is the old stuff, I'd still watch it! But I did notice that "TOM" was advertising a lot of DVDs associated with the said shows though too.
If they did bring it back it would be a nice improvment!!

Yeah, that was the deal. Rights to air for one night and AS would promote the associated DVDs.

Alchemist007 2012-04-01 16:23

I wouldn't count on anything happening next Saturday in particular. But yeah, give CN your feedback on it. I presume they only just put up the "Toonami" section under "Programming," tell them you want more!

It was so good to watch anime tell 4am again to bad it was only one day

Best joke ever

Wasn't Toonami basically just a string of crappy dubs from the days where Funimation was basically just a second 4Kids, replaced soundtracks and terribly innacurate dialogue and all? Why is everyone sad that it's gone?

Possibly because it was FREE! And it did show a lot of Bandai's old works including Cowboy Bebop, and the classic Tenchi Muyo! Plus it did a lot if free advertising to promote anime during its run as well.

Not the Toonami that I'm recalling. . . at least before it moved to Saturdays only.

Hm, I don't remember the dubs being crappy at all for the most part. They seemed pretty much average to good in most cases.
