Where to Find Unlicensed Manga Scans

Manga is being licensed, translated and published in the US and elsewhere at an increasing rate. Also, an increasing number of manga translation groups is producing an amazing quantity of "fanscans" (unlicensed manga which is scanned, translated, edited and presented in digital form).

Because finding and downloading unlicensed manga scans is not as simple as it is for unlicensed anime, I have prepared this guide as a reference for the Manga forum. Please read and follow this guide before starting a new thread in the Manga forum asking how to find unlicensed manga scans.

Manga Jouhou is currently the most complete guide to licensed and unlicensed manga. Consult the titles list to find out if a title is licensed or is being translated; contact information for translation groups is also provided. This site lists new releases on its front page daily; be sure to bookmark the site in your web browser.

Most translation groups have their own website; many offer their scans for WWW download; however this is not always the case. For each group it is important to read any information about how they offer their work.

For each group who is translating manga you are interested in, make a bookmark for the group's website in your web browser because it is easier than obtaining the link from Manga Jouhou each time you wish to visit.

Many groups host most or all of their work exclusively on Internet Chat Relay (IRC). This means that for most people interested in obtaining unlicensed manga, it is essential to learn to use IRC.

Teaching the use of irc is beyond the scope of the Manga forum. Please do not direct questions about IRC to this forum.

Information in the use of IRC is easily available. The ShoujoMagic group has prepared an irc guide at http://www.shoujomagic.org/irc/ which will take you through the process of obtaining necessary software, connecting to IRC, and locating and downloading manga scans.

Looks like a pretty cool site... thanks.

Too bad it hasnt been updated since 2004 :(

IMSabbel 2006-01-01 07:57

yes, thats VERY bad.
But for everything a bit older, it has TONS more information than any other site i found yet...

Manganews totally loses to dailymanga, due to the fact that they separate releases and titles. You cant see scanlations in titles section and you cant make a title search in releases section. So there.

Looking for Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken manga

I don't know where to post a Manga request, so if I posted this on the wrong section, please feel free to move my post, or remove it.

Anyways, I've been trying to look for this manga for quite a while now. I have tried looking everywhere, and I have found a couple of sites saying that this manga has been translated, but all the links were dead.

Does anyone know where can I download this manga, and if there isn't anywhere where I can DL it, maybe a site that has summary of the volumes. I'll really appreciate it, thanks in advance.

Downloading Manga

Where can you download manga online, that's been translated to english. It would be a great help!:p

Vexx 2006-11-13 21:11

Here's a couple of links that'll help you get started .... most of them only handle unlicensed manga fyi...

http://www.manganews.net/ (I use this one a lot)
http://www.mangadownload.net/index.php (occasionally tested)

Otherwise, just clever googling for specific titles usually lands a hit on some hobbyist's page who shares his efforts.

Vexx 2007-05-12 02:22

Um... there's already a sticky thread for question on where to download manga scanlations?

But manganews.com or baka-updates.com is a good place to start --- as far as I can tell the series isn't licensed for english translation yet.

dc_talkz 2007-05-12 02:25

thanks for da reply vexx, anyway i tried going to that site u gave me. how to i read the manga? or download it? i tried clicking at the chapters, but nothing happens.. sorry,im new to this

Vexx 2007-05-12 02:28

If they've got a linky to their files, they're usually "torrents" so you'd have to have 'utorrent' installed. Then you'd just torrent the file down and then extract and read the images. Sometimes the link is dead... I didn't check any of the dearboys to see.

Finding scans is a real googling artform at times... and I'm always a little leery of tripping across licensed manga issues.

dc_talkz 2007-05-12 02:31

Vexx 2007-05-12 02:33

about manga news download

Umm guys, tell me how to download the releases from manganews? I can't seem to get it work, i find the release, click the name, but nothing happens? i'm so confused.

Claies 2007-05-26 00:51

Manganews.net does not provide downloads. It's simply an index of every manga that has ever been scanlated and the groups that did them. There may be links to the groups where you can get it from, but Manganews doesn't have any downloads.
