Lovely Complex
 

Does anyone else here read/love this series? I love Otani and even though he's short I can see why he's popular. I really feel for Risa too, because I'm not feminine and sort of tall for my age. Most boys never really thought of me as a girl in school.

This is being made into a live-action movie, it's out this August. I'm so excited, I think the main characters were casted pretty well and it looks good. I want to see it!!

Ah~ Those of you into the manga, does the anime follow it well? This may be one series I pick up because I'm lovin' the anime. :)

@Risaa Actually the manga contains more material than the anime but nothing important was changed or forgotten in the anime. The manga is definetely worth a read though :) But hm I read til the latest chapter it seems to be volume 6 out of 16 and if the anime goes on like it does now it shouldn't take much longer til it is at the same point as I'm with reading now. And to LoveCom fans I highly recommend Koukou Debut, unfortunately only the manga is out, but it's totally cute and worth reading ^^

Oh yes...I just want to read this manga soooo much because of my love for the anime.

My understanding is that the manga contains a lot more of the "decaying orbit" type of romance (things get better/worse/better in multiple arcs) but that the adaptation to anime was fairly successful.

I've got an eye out for it (gotta sell off all my "started but aborted" series first).

@Vexx Yep the Anime follows the manga very well and gives off the same atmosphere and feeling which is most important. Though Risa is even cuter in the Manga ^^

Just a heads up to everyone, this manga has been licensed as Love*Com by Viz Media. It has a US release date of July 3rd 2007.

I wanted to see if the manga keeps the visual gags of the anime... and saw this... Enough. I probably won't be waiting until late this year to get it. That really cracked me up. :O

Hmm, you may already know, but the Japanese (like Koreans too, actually... the examples I used are also used in Korean) like to shorten long foreign words. So you get neat words like:

Remote control -> RemoCon -> rimokon
Television -> Televi -> terebi

So I'm not surprised in the least that Lovely Complex was also shortened... I almost expected that it would be when I realized "Lovely Complex" was the title (and not a translation of the title).... (Besides... doesn't "rabu kon" sound cute? :) )

I can't even recognize her... I guess I need the context @_@; This series has a lot of shocking moments... I love. ;)

Yeah, I'm aware of the japanese (korean, too, eh?) predilection for mangling phrases into short "acronym-words"... ('persocom' is a favorite).

but what does "lovely complex" mean? The closest linguistic blob I can think of is "Lolita complex" (shortened to lolicon) .... so the "lovely complex" means someone who has a fascination with lovely things???

Anyway, any clues appreciated but that's the best I can figure so far.

I didn't think of "lovely complex" like lolicon... I assumed "complex" was being used informally to mean "a disproportionate concern or anxiety about something" (quoting from my comp dictionary :heh: ), because Risa and Atsushi both have complexes about their heights.

I'm more unsure about "lovely" though... One thing it might be is that it has "love" in it, and their complexes about their heights are preventing them from feeling OK about falling in love with others.. especially each other. I'm really guessing about this one though.

Ah.. pasocon is also used in Korean... it could be that it was taken from Japanese. Last-last semester I found out that many Korean loan words are taken from Japanese, which took it from whatever language it came from (like "arubaito", if I remember right, is originally German, Japanese took it, then Korean took it from Japanese)... So many Korean loan words are said with a Korean accent on an already-Japanese-accented word. Eep, does that make sense?

I'm surprised more people aren't talking about this manga, as it totally rocks! I loved the movie, and I definitely as really happy about how the anime follows pretty closely, but I definitely would put this at the top of my list!!

Many people, including myself, will/are probably be keeping up with the manga, but I suppose there's not much for some people to say on the matter unless they've read more than the preview in Shojo Beat. Once the first volume comes out, I'm sure more posts will be generated. For now, the concentration is probably on the anime.

Whoa, in the manga pic that you posted she looks soooo...wow!!!! I can't wait to see Risa like that in the anime and the expression on Otani's face when he'll see her before him...CAN'T WAIT!!!

Seriously, this thread will probably lay nice and quiet until the english editions start arriving. No big deal on this forum since keeping the relevant data in one place is more important than necromancy.

I'm going to guess it's just a mangled combination of "love" and "complex" (as in "complicated" or "complication"). Love as an adjective makes it "Lovely Complex". Perhaps "Love Complications" might be a more sensible way of saying it, but... it's certainly not a more FUN way of saying it!

It's so much fun to hear them in the previews: "Lovely Complex: ラブ★コン！" :D

Just discovered that there's a sequel called "Lovely Complex Plus". [*continues doing the Hale+Guu dance in the background*]
There's only three chapters, but it should be interesting. :)

so far i was able to reach upto vol. 6 for the manga but i've seen on deviantart -fan art designs for the later volumes and i must say i can't come to terms if they're spoilers or not but it's bugging me!! so if anyone has access to the later scanlations for love com. i'd really appreciate it. sho'jump here takes a long while to get in nyc.

Finally spotted and picked up volume 1 of this series.

Will post a review after I complete the reading.... :)

English or Japanese version?

I added the LoveCom com (haha :p ) to my friends list over on LJ a few weeks ago... my gosh, that group sure is lively. O_o They're completely dominating my friends list to the point that I can't even see "regular" friends' entries anymore without scrolling down a kilometer or so. There's some weird stuff added in (well, it *is* an open com), but for all who want the occasional LoveCom tidbit (including color scans, fanart, links to raws and scanlations..) and are members of LJ, I suggest adding them as well. A lot of the members also have some wicked neat LoveCom icons. :)

It'll be English --- it was released this month.

I saw this in a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Minnesota yesterday.

They had one copy. I only had a little time to look at it but it looks good.
Lots of little things left out of the anime are in here so there's more details
about the side characters and certain situations.

I'll probably end up getting it.

Aye... I should have specified. Its the english version (found at my local Barnes & Noble). I've avoided the scans and raws completely during the course of the anime.

However, I figure I'm safe with the english manga since its just starting and on the usual 3 month release schedule.

The only thing I suspect I'll lament is not being able to hear Otani and Risaa's fabulous Kansai-ben growls and drawls.

Me too... I &hearts the anime. Usually I don't mind spoiling myself rotten, but with LoveCom I'm going to wait - I'd rather see how the ending turns out in the anime before importing and reading the manga. What few scans I've read was enough to completely turn me onto it. :) o.o!... *growls and drawls* Now I definitely have to learn Kansaiben, since people keep claiming I know it.

Seriously though, that's one thing I really miss when I go from great anime -> great manga. You no longer have the wonderful voices, theme songs, great BGM or even little things like the fluid motion of Risa spinning Atsushi and then letting go, releasing him into the sky. Another easily-overlooked thing is that the anime is in *color*, not made with ink and screentones. Let me tell you, screentones are evil... at least if you live in a desert like I do (and the adhesive melts and no longer works properly).

i got the first vol last weekend and read it in a few hours? can't remember..just as funny as the anime. has risa's silly expressions and everything wonder when the 2nd vol comes out....

Aye, I finished reading volume one of the english edition last week. Art and situations are quite funny... enjoy the expanded storyline.

I think the only thing I miss is the sound of kansai-ben being growled.

I haven't decided whether the english translation even attempts to convey the feel of kansai-ben. Will reread with that in mind. I suppose there was some slangy talk but I will say they seemed to convey Risaa's attitude fairly well.

I think it is kind of interesting that, in the japanese scheme of things, anime exists mostly to drive the sales of merchandise (manga, figurines, DVDs, CDs, etc).
Like Risaa says.... a well-done anime almost leaves its source anime in the shadow with all the extra input (music, voicing, etc). Though I enjoy what I've seen of the manga so far, there is that bit of a nag. Hopefully the additional content mops up that feeling.

For those who've read the English version, were the characters all given some sort of southern accent? (You know, with the "y'all", "I'm fixin' to do that", just a couple examples... You want an accent, just chat with Kyuusai for a few hours. He'll kill me for saying that. :p :p )

For the record, I'm told I have a "California accent", whatever that is.

I actually like being in anime and manga series, but what gets me is that nobody ever asked for my permission to depict me in the story. And I also see this "any relations to real persons, deceased or living, is purely coincidental" message and think what a bunch of crap that is!

Okay.... no, they didn't go southern (thank the gods). Its almost like a very mild New Jersey (or New Yorker - which I've always thought matched a bit better but I can certainly see the cultural Houston, TX connection to the Kansai region (we're here to make money)).

No actually word mangling: but a lot of dropped endings and contractions, very casual almost insolent chatter.
Examples: "I'll be hunched over, always worryin' about my height" "pretty darn slick" " "cuz it's cool, eh?" "What the hell?"

They leave the honorifics alone (e.g. Otani-kun) ... points for that. They translate Otani's insult to Risa as "jumbo-gal" rather than "Amazon" as the fansubs do ... I prefer the "amazon".

Makes me think when he encounters the girls later who ask him to "talk kansai" ... if they'll give them Brit accents or just uptown Manhattan accents. That's the only "wow you talk funny" moment I remember in the anime.

lol you like monty python? i want to see the next manga, i am definitely buying it. read the first one a few times already. in the manga they don't really have a southern accent..

I love this manga, but All what’ve read till now was exactly the same as the anime :P !!

Well... it isn't "scene for scene" identical, but it is nice that the adaptation to the anime was really tight. There are a few in between scenes that are additional and some of the motivation changes slightly.

I'm not going to do an obsessively detailed comparison but if you watch ep 1 with the book in hand, you'll see some differences though they're obviously for time budget management rather than a real story modification. I have heard as the manga progresses, there will be more and more "additional material" or slight changes in who does what and where.

i agree with vexx the main story is the same but small details changed.

I'm watching the live action movie right now and need to know if life in Japan for teenagers is really like this? I want to think no and it's just overly dramatic, but I know Japan is the home of the weird. Do people really wear their hats like that and dress like that? It's so trashy even when americans do it.
