I know it's not just all about ratings anymore, but this is still looking bleak for the future of noitaminA's josei series considering Apollon's most likely not going to move a whole lot of DVDs/BDs either, and there most definitely hasn't been a notable increase in the manga's sales (the latest volume released two weeks ago didn't make it into the top30 and sold 23k units in its first week)... Japan. :/ Should Moyashimon Returns not do great, it'll probably be like a nail in the coffin as for your average oldtaminA show.

I wonder if it wasn't a strategic mistake to run Apollon first. Tsuritama is certainly weird, but I think it actually has a broader appeal than the moodier show before it. I know Apollon had all the Watanabe-Kanno hype, but to be honest, that might matter more outside Japan than it does with the contemporary domestic anime audience.

I don't think it was necessarily a bad gamble to have Apollon as the first batter. It wasn't only promoted with the Watanabe/Kanno angle, but also quite a few times as the "return of a music show on noitaminA, after Nodame Cantabile". The latter did have three seasons which all did great on the timeslot, after all, so going back to josei with music as a major element in common was a way of playing it safe, in a certain way (the transition might've felt more abrupt if they went with Natsuyuki Rendez-vous on the first slot right away, for example). But it probably just wasn't enough to get your average Japanese person's attention either - for one, the initial popularity of the two series are not even remotely close... and besides, many have already grown out of watching noitaminA for a few seasons, and any attempt at going back to the roots just keeps looking more and more futile... well, Moyashimon is one last chance at it, I suppose.

I had faith that the series' quality would help the ratings pick up thanks to the word of mouth, though - but it just doesn't work like that sometimes, sadly.

It's worth noting that the second one is in direct competition with the reruns of One Piece which bring in quite good ratings.
