Steampunk or similar

i am looking for a nice action based steampunk or similar anime,

things that i want:
-nice and cool characters
-nice art and animation quality, nice music
-the plot mostly i'll prefer based on magic, guns and swords can be a side thing but not the main theme
-good humor
-cool steampunk clothing and style
-may be a little gothic

things that i don't want:
-plot with fight against demons with special weapons(already seen the best of such theme in D.gray Man)
-gore, blood is fine(like in FMA),but no gore(by gore i mean, limbs and heads flying around and flesh and organ bursts)
-rape,torture, or anything heavy disturbing
-war setting
-mechanical things, a little is okay, but not too much of it

Millitary can be a side thing, but not the main theme, sometimes dark or serious atmosphere is okay, but not going into very much tragedy.
A different non action plot is also welcomed

Steampunk or similar animes that i have seen, and want similar to these
Full Metal Alchemist/Brotherhood
D.Gray Man
Soul Eater
07-Ghost
Pandora Hearts
Black Butler- din't like it very much

And thanks in advance:)

I would definitely check out the original Last Exile, which is a stellar example of the steampunk vibe. I'd avoid the sequel though.

What I would recommend too, but you said you didn't want a war setting... I'd watch it anyways.

Why don't you give Howl's Moving Castle a shot. I'm sure it'll have what you're looking for.

i din't go for it, since it's main focus seems to be on war, i am looking for something more magic related

Seems no one mentioned Steam Boy... but its a movie. Its a great anime... and expensively done... Though mechanical in theme, its still good. I highly recommend it.

No regrets. Great anime.

How about Samurai 7???
Has a little bit of action fighting, but overall a good serie...

Love that one. Seconding it:)

Guardian Enzo 2012-08-14 12:07

A little???

I like Samurai 7, but if the OP is skipping LE (IMO the finest steampunk anime ever) because it has a war subplot, S7 would be an odd choice. I think he should watch both, but I'd certainly start with LE.

It's important not to get fixated on the dictionary definition of words when replying to suggestions. The OP asked for steampunk, but then gave a list of what he considers steampunk (as well as not liking machines ). Now, 'steampunk' is certainly not the first, second, third, etc, word that would come to mind when I look at the shows on his list. So, throw your conceptions of what steampunk is out the window.

Based on your show list, OP, I feel like what you're basically looking for is pseudo-Victorian era/early industrial era/early 1900s type settings.

In which case I'd suggest something like Baccano!. There are guns, but there's also magic. Plus, it's practically a classic.

The Last Avatar would probably also fit neatly into what you're looking for, with plenty of magic, and while there's war going on, it's no more intrusive to the plot as it is in Full Metal Alchemist, which was on your list. The tech level is predominantly 'steam'-level.

^ i think FMA and D.gray Man, pretty much does fall into steampunk category, soul eater and 07-ghost aren't exactly steampunk, but they do have steampunk elements in it,ok my requirements might not be exactly steampunk, but as the title says "or similar"

and by, not lot of machines i meant(i am clearing this again), lots of heavy and large machines or factories, as i already said i don't mind if it's there, but just shouldn't be excessive

and i did start on Baccano!, but din't continue it after first 15 min, as it was getting very confusing in the beginning and also lots of gore.Does it contain lot of gore in the series later on?

not necessarily all the "wants" should be satisfied, but all the "don't wants" should be

You may try Sakura Taisen OVA1 and OVA2, if you don't mind mostly female cast. You may also try Gosick. Both are not strictly steampunk, but set around the Victorian era.

Yes, especially the scenes with Ladd Russo and the Rail Tracer. Baccano! is not a "steampunk" show either, at least as I understand the term. (Last Exile and Howl's Moving Castle seem paradigmatic of the genre to me.) Surprisingly, the only recent show I can think of with some steampunk stylistic features is AKB0048, some episodes of which are set on a planet that looks like an industrial wasteland. The recent Lupin III/Mine Fujiko series might also fit.

If you're looking for a nice show with a 19th century setting, I'll recommend Ikoku Meiro no Croisee, about a Japanese girl who goes to Paris in the late 1800's. Allison to Lillia might also have some appeal.

Steampunk does not seem to be very popular these days.

Your request is kinda difficult outside of FMA & D.Gray-man, but here are some more addition that you can try:

Chrono Crusade (young female nun, accompanied by a demon as a bodyguard)
Pumpkin Scissors (pure steampunk, no magic)
Strike Witch (this is basically about magical soldier girls)
Trinity Blood (basically similar with D.Gray-man)

mystogan 2012-08-16 04:59

^among the above, i do see some similarities between Trinity Blood and D.gray man.
only two questions, does it have some humor?
and does it have lots of gore(as i mentioned at the start)?

Obelisk ze Tormentor 2012-08-16 05:09

Trinity Blood has humor (just a little) and also not too heavy on the gore (for me at least).

Please note that the titles that I recommend you before don't always have the greatest stories since my priority is the elements that fit your request (particularly steampunk/victorian setting). ;)

mystogan 2012-08-16 05:16

Anyway, thanks for it, i guess i'll be giving Trinity Blood a try

ok i have watched Chrono Crusade out of these, it did fill some of my requirements, well there were demons in it which i din't preferred, but the good things was that the plot wasn't just focused on the battle against demons, there were much many things in it, and i liked the ending also

i was also trying for Trinity Blood, but could not get it, due my original net connection expired, but will watch it soon,

And thanks for these suggestions once again:)
