I would like to request in advance that episode 2 discussion please remain under spoiler tags until a translation comes out. I have nothing against you all discussing it, but some of us, and I know I'm not the only one, aren't going to watch the episode until we can understand it, and we'd prefer not to learn the details until we have that chance.
If everyone could be so kind, I'd greatly appreciate it. :) |
A much more interesting first episode than I was expecting, but Aria pairing up with one of the lowest ranks of the E class, huh, should be fun to see her grow under Aria.
Though between the dream, the past flashback, and Akari somehow get those car keys I feel like she isn't completely normal despite her rank. Also Raika & Shino remind a lot of Eli & Nozomi from LL, so I feel a need to ship them already.... :uhoh: |
Akari seems like a thief-type hero: she can slip in as her enemy hits her and snatch something off them, usually without them noticing. She also may have some ability to move to minimize impacts, because that car crash should have made a mess of her, ballistic clothing or no.

Episode 1 definitely kicks off Double A to a good start. Colours are quite vibrant, Aria's early hairstyle change is more than welcomed as it suits her quite well, and the music is overall pleasant to hear; in fact I've found this episode alone to have been more enjoyable than most of the original series, but perhaps it's just me.
It was a good note to see how Akari does get affected by failures even if she does bounces back afterwards and since I haven't read the manga, I can't wait to see how her mysterious side comes to play in the story, especially because we can obviously see during the test that she's not as weak as she looks at first even if she just executed a counter-attack… Well, that and her inhuman resistance to injuries. :heh: Her circumstances appear to be quite different from just Kinji's Hysteria Mode. On the other hand, Aria is also a lot more enjoyable without her recurring Kinji-induced tsundere traits, so I'm also looking forward to see how she'll encourage and train Akari and whether her own personal issues will be a part of the spin-off. |

I have read the translated manga and I can say its nice to see Aria acting as a sempai and not a tsundere. The episode itself is nice and I like the cameo part of Kinji and Shirayuki with Fuuma showing up out of no where. |
Well, that went way differently from how it did in the manga, but that's definetly for the best, since the original way Akari gets accepted was honestly lame for a series about girls shooting guns and kicking butt, only serving as a flimsy connection to the main story, something the Kinji and Shirayuki cameo did a lot better.
On the other hand, it looks like the next episode will go very much like it did in the manga, which is a good thing, though it will probably show one potential problem of this series regarding its characters, but we'll see. I also agree on Aria being much more fun as a sempai. Not all heroines are better off left on their own, but that's obviously the case here, even without having much experience on the main series. |
Ep 01
Have only read the first chapter of the manga spin off the series is based on, so dont know a lot about the series proper, but count me in among those who think Aria as a character is way more interesting as a sempai. The first ep was far more engaging than I thought it would be, particularly since I disliked the first season of the anime and the novels i read. In the beginning dream sequence Akari was shown doing some kind of special move involving electricity or something. Her ability to grab things like that has only bedn shown on metal things, so I wonder if some kind of weak magnetism could be involved too? Hmm...not sure. Must admit though, since the VA for Akari is the same for Cocoa in GochUsa I kept having these weird crossover images of Aria and Cocoa interacting. |
I have not seen the first Hidan no Aria series, but the descriptions of it did not, and still do not, appeal to me. This series, on the other hand, catches my interest so far. I think I'll give it a shot.

Episode 2 has been translated. Per my request above (which I much appreciate folks honoring thus far) people may now feel free to talk about it without spoiler tags. I'll get to that myself soon, if other folks don't post more before I finish it. ATTENTION, I WILL NOW TALK ABOUT EPISODE 2. IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED IT, READ FURTHER AT YOUR OWN RISK. Not that there's any big surprises here if you watched the preview in episode 1, or, for that matter, caught the clues in Shino's behavior in ep 1. Shino is an Akari-obsessed yandere, and she decides that the best way to keep from losing Akari to Aria is to try to kill Akari defeat Akari in a fight before three days have passed, so that the Amica contract will be cancelled due to an obscure rule. Akari turns out to have some manner of ninja training, likely dating back to before that flashback we keep seeing of her and unspecified other girl (her sister?) being chased from burning buildings by packs of dogs. Speaking of which, I'm not certain what was the deal with the dogs during Shino's attack: they showed up, triggered Akari's flashback and trauma, and then vanished into thin air. Were they actually there, was she hallucinating them due to her tragic past, did the production studio just screw that whole scene up, what happened? Regardless, Akari applies anti-ballistic clothing to Shino's sword, and tosses her into the fountain, Shino cries, Akari is not angry at all despite her friend just trying to kill her, Shino retreats further into her obsessive mode, and the epsiode ends happily(?). Someone needs to get these kids some psychotherapy, because it can't be healthy to have heavily-armed teenagers with these sorts of mental problems running around the city with legal authority to act on their own volition. |
@random wanderer
From what little I've seen and heard about HnA, the world and story are built around rule of cool, so trying to take any of it seriously, outside of characters' backstories, I suppose, is not recommended. Just enjoy the yandere lesbian ojou-sama. I know I will :D Also, I'm going with the dissapearing dogs being an animation flop. This isn't gatchaman crowds. Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one. Anyway, props to Akari for actually getting out of that one on her own, and in a pretty cool fashion too. Good to know she's aware of her own abilities, and isn't that much of a loser when in comes to close quarters. Next time: More crazy lesbians, it seems, and of the loli variety to boot. |
I must say, Shino can be quite scary when she gets serious....
Her devotion towards Akari is quite something of course. |

Ep 02
Well, there were some interesting tidbits dropped as to the nature of Akari's backstory...ninja training of some sort and a traumatic past experience related to a fire and attack dogs that she only remembers in teensy flashes. Looks like this ep chalked up the snatching ability to a specific ninja training. The other aspects were...sorta just okay at best. Ep 02 got to focus on the long, black haired ojou-sama friend of Akari and Ep 03 will focus on the shorter haired tall blond rough n tumble one. Thus far though the budding friendship between Aria and Akari is by far the more interesting element to see for me. |
I find it hilarious that Shino made an amica with Shirayuki:heh:
It would be hilarious when the yandere duo realize that they have a common enemy. Poor Aria. Can't escape from yanderes. |
Since this is more of a spin-off similar to railgun to index, what's the timeline that AA is taking place? Or is it just misc.?
Like after Akari sewed up the glider for Aria and the next scene we see her mention Aria used it during 'that incident' what incident is she referring to? Its been a while. |
Quote:
the 'incident' is the bike bombing incident where Kinji and Aria meets for the first time in the first episode of the orginal. |
So... does this require watching the original series, as someone who couldn't get himself past the first episode of the original for some damn reason?

Ep2 I am now definitely in the group who enjoys seeing Aria more like a senapi, it made the episode pretty good. Though it seems I really jumped the sword gun on seeing Shino and Raika as a thing :uhoh:, Shino's room towards Akari was quite something I have to say :heh:.

Oh. Considering the source, it's a pretty damn good spin-off.
Spoiler:
Ahem. And yes, just like always it's easier to look at competent tsunderes when they're away from their dumbness-inducing idiots. |
