Best Voice Acting In A VideoGame

Whats, in your opinion, the best voice acting you've heard in a videogame?

Personally, I liked Tidus from FFX, and Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid (series).

ramune 2004-10-12 01:04

I think Xenosaga has the best voice acting overall.

Hi_There 2004-10-12 13:17

dunno about best, but I think Ray Leota(sp?) was pretty good in Vice city.

DekaMaster 2004-10-12 14:38

XenoSaga and SO3. Most of the voice cast from XS is in SO3

Tommy 2004-10-12 15:26

I go with Metal Gear Solid, Although Kingdom Hearts has all those great disney VA's.

Entropy 2004-10-12 21:58

Orkses + Cockney accents= win.

TrueKnight 2004-10-13 02:40

The best gotta be the Metal Gear series : Solid/Twin Snakes and Sons of Liberty. David Hayter's a badass while playing Snake.

Second is a tie between Xenosaga and Shadow Hearts : Covenant. Overall Xenosaga looked wonderful, especially Albedo in the Momo scene....God he's scary...and the other VA's really fit their chars, but he's matched by the badassness of Yuri Volte Hyuga's voice actings....which is imo, the best main char voice acting besides Solid Snake. You can actually laugh yourself hard and sadly cry while hearing Yuri....at least in my case.

Third is well....Kingdom Hearts, SO 3 and Final Fantasy X series. KH had tons of budget, SO 3 had Cliff, and Final Fantasy X had Auron and Wakka.

That's my 2 cents.....

wsheit 2004-10-13 06:16

You guys are all wrong IMHO :D. The best voice acting in all of video gaming is found in Soul Reaver 2/Legacy of Kain:Defiance. Nearly everybody in that cast is simply superb. There is a series where the emphasis is almost entirely on the story-telling, and well do the actors tell their story.

I noticed someone mention Kingdom hearts? Aaaack! I was just playing some of that tonight and decided that voice acting might not be Haley Joel Osment's strong point. Actually, I could see somebody saying KH had good voice acting if it wasn't for him- most of the Disney voices are quite classic, but Osment.....well....not so much....

NighT-TrippeR 2004-10-13 15:14

Ah yes, forgot to mention The Legacy of Kain series. Superb voice acting.

As for SO3, I was debating on whether or not I should mention it, as alot of the VA in it is crap in my opinion... Fayt does just -ok-, Cliff, although at first I thought he sounded a little too "superhero"-esque, had a VA that grew on me alot through the game and now I'm positive that Cliff is the strongest VA in the game. Roger and Albel weren't bad either.

phatcat 2004-10-13 19:46

don't know about the best...
but I do know the worst.

Farcry's main character >_<
[comicbookguy]worst acting EVER![/comicbookguy]

But in Xenosaga the lipsynching is really bad (I'm assuming your talking about the English version). I don't dislike the voice acting, however.

I'm none too particular about voice acting generally, unless I've heard the original or it really IS bad, though I like to see good lipsynching.

I was watching Cinematech (I was bored) when they had a cutscene from The Bouncer on, and I decided that I really liked one of the characters' voices (if that wasn't the actor for the English version of Spike from bebop, it was someone who sounded alot like him). Funny, I hadn't realized I liked Spike's voice before (I just looked at some credits, and yes, it seems it was the same guy).

kj1980 2004-10-14 20:37

the seiyuu Hokuto Minami (aka Hitomi) from various lead roles in ero-games.

IntrepidAKP 2004-10-14 21:42

Bastilla in KOTOR is pretty good. Aeris and Viconia have good voices in BG2. Everybody in Planescape: Torment.

lordwu 2004-10-14 23:54

So the Xenosaga english voice acting was actually good? Listened to some of the sample voices on Xenosaga's site and the only feeling I had was: WTH? Maybe I was very biased since I've already heard the voice acting in japanese, but I should probably open up my copy of US version of Xenosaga and try it out. :P

Ending 2004-10-15 05:03

Castlevania: The Symphony of the Night -the english voice-cast has been the best I have ever heard. :heh: :joke:

I would like to vote for one of my favorite games, Baldur's Gate 2, but due of the fact that there aren't too much of spoken dialog I have to skip. Out of several, equally good games, I only remember Thief 2 having a pretty good voice-actor for the protagonist (Garret).

Fei-san 2004-10-18 09:04

Monkey island series :p
"Ahoy there im Guybrush Threepwood , a mighty pirate!"

Remian 2004-10-23 15:18

jeez, you guys video game range only consists of games from japan.....how typical...
The best voice acting comes from licensed games like Alias and Spiderman
Japanese games actually have the WORST voice acting of all games.

Entropy 2004-10-24 19:18

For the record,my choice is from a developer located in western Canada with the license holder in the UK,unless there's a Japanese game that has a race called "Orks" that have kick ass cockney accents somewhere :heh:.

Besides...this is an anime forum, wouldn't this be expected?I mean I play all kinds of games,I don't care if they're American,Canadian,Japanese,Korean or Antartican unless they're good. However if I'm going to a forum about stuff from Japan, and since Japan has game developers too,I would expect most of the picks to be from that country as well due to the focus.

Calca 2004-10-24 19:36

Conker's Bad Fur Day was good IMO

Tales of Symphonia had good acting

I suppose you're talking about Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War? :hmm:
If so, then I have to agree that it's pretty good ^_^

But for best voice acting I have to go for Fallout (2). There's not a whole lot of voice acting in it, but the small bits that are in it are amazingly good.

aahhsin 2004-10-25 18:16

I would like to add 007 : Everything or Nothing.

That has some of the best voice acting. In fact, it's actually James Bond himself, Pierce Bronsnan.

Judo 2004-10-26 17:55

My vote goes to SRW, lotsa hot blodded pilots = lotsa shouting = great voice acting xD

It started out kinda <Bleah>, but starting around the middle of the game and headingf towards the end of the game, one can tell (at least from my perspective) that the VA's for the parts got into their roles and produced a fairly decent voice track. I liked it.

sarky-sama 2004-10-26 18:27

My favorite game for voice acting so far has to be between Disagea and Phantom Brave. Laharl is just too funny :twitch:

Marvel 2004-10-27 03:50

I like the voice acting in FFX-2, really awesome !. I Played both versions; the Japanese and US version. The Japanse version was really good, the Us version was reasonble. Not bad but could've been better :uhoh:

I assume/hope you're talking about the Japanese VA's?

Yeah, it's pretty hard to argue with Brosnan...besides, they've got Mya doing the opening theme- best Bond theme in years, imho- I wish the song was on one of her albums

I like all voices in XenoSaga except for the brat, brat's blonde redneck assistant and Shion. Hedy Buress, please stop ruining games mmkay?

I love KOS-MOS' voice though.

XanderPhoenix 2004-11-20 08:52

i thought onimusha 3 had the best voice talent in Jean Reno as Jacques he was wicked

HopelessLover 2004-11-20 08:58

That batman game for PS2 had some AWSOME voice characters. (Although the game sucked :( )

Me too.I know some people didn't like it because she sounded "Too old",but she's an Android wtf?

Btw...I would like to nominate most of the cast of GTA:San Andreas for best voice acting, particularly Samuel L. Jackson and Charlie Murphy, those guys ROCK!

Zhaxra 2004-11-23 13:12

More threads that make me feel old... but my vote has to be Full Throttle from Lucasarts.

Altimit 2004-11-25 17:39

Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines has excelent voice acting. Disgaea comes in second(And no, not the Japanese voices, the English ones, they're awsome).

AnimeFangirl 2004-11-25 18:42

English voice acting or Japanese voice acting? Either way my vote goes to the entire cast of Metal Gear Solid. Whether in English or in Japanese, those guys ROCKED!! Excellent jobs all round.
Honourable mention: English cast in Starfox 64. They didn't say much, but they said it well.

SirCanealot 2004-11-26 07:58

The Legacy of Kain series, and ESPECIALLY Soul Reaver 2. Infact, I loved Soul Reaver 2's dialogue so much, I ended up writing about it in English for some spoken texts coursework (saved my ass too - I had 3 texts, and most of my marks probably came from the SR2 analysis :P).
Baldur's Gate 2 is also very nice.
I'd have said Metal Gear Solid, but I'm so pissed off with the shitty, shitty acting in Metal Gear Solid 3, I'm retracting that statement completely.

Pabst 2004-11-27 20:37

1. Metal Gear Solid (Raiden is crap in the second one)
2. Legacy of Kain (Original Soul Reaver was done the best, imo)
3. Knights of the Old Republic (Although the hero doesn't have a voice, others are done superbly)
4. GTA (If anyone has played San Andreas, they know what I'm talking about)
5. Halo 1/2 (For a MS game, it's done surprisingly well. MC and Sarge in particular)

Personally, RPGs are my favorite genre, but I just don't think the Japanese translation teams get good actors to do the roles. SO3 was probably the best done, but even that one got annoying enough that I muted it and put on subtitles.

GTA San Andreas- very good voice acting. I like CJ's actor.

ZGoten 2010-01-07 20:01

Ah, found it, I was sure there had to be a thread about voice acting in video games.

In my opinion, there are many games with great voic acting, but if I had to narrow it down to the best voice actors, I'd probably go with:

- Paul Eiding, especially as Colonel Roy Campbell in the Metal Gear Solid-Series.
- Brian Cox as Scolar Visari in the Killzone-series

Kazu 2010-01-07 20:28

Definitely chris and wesker in the original Resident evil especially that one part
Chris:hahahaha
Wesker:Chris?
Chris:AHAHAHAHAHA!
Wesker:stop it :(

If you know what i'm saying i'm joking i'd have to say my favorite VA's are from the MGS franchise

Drake 2010-01-07 20:32

To many to list D=

Paxton fettle from F.E.A.R was pretty creepy and well voiced.

All of the cast of dead space where pretty top notch as where the cast of mass effect.

Hayter was pretty awesome as snake in all the mgs's aswell.

"Mancomb Thistlereed."

Hilarity ensues.

My vote'd go to Metal Gear as a series but signularly I love Valkyria Chronicles English VAs. Colleen O'Shaughnesse (Alicia and a great name by the way) has such a wonderful voice.
