Well since my Vancouver plans fell through, and I do not want to go to London for the games (if I can find a friend or relative that could buy me some tickets (I would reimburse them, of course) and house me for free...maybe), yes I would like the 2016 games in Chicago.

I'm partial to Rio myself; it's time that the Olympic Games take place in Latin America. Besides we'll probably get to see lots of "human interest" coverage of the Brazilians on the beaches there.... And, no, I'm not talking about the people.

I wouldn't mind S America too, but the reports and scores after the 4 countries were elected were looking towards Tokyo and Madrid.
America had it for Atlanta, Spain had it for Barcelona so first timers would be Japan and Brazil at present.

However given that the president is from Chicago, I see some campaign points being used there.
All I can say from the JP front is that they're seriously going all out with their campaign bid, filming and noting and presenting mini displays of various sports events and national and international events (I went to a few, participated in one as part of the Olympic bid) to showcase to the Olympic committee who'll decide.

Personally, methinks Japan could do with more injecton of internationlism as they're trying to show... well at least where the campaining is concerned, but all efforts are appreciated anyways, let's see how it goes....

Not to sound harsh or anything, but I don't think it would be fair to hand the games to the US...... again.

They had them in 1984 and 1996 plus the winter ones in 2002. The way I see it, they should hand them over to Brazil or Japan as a second choice.

Brazil, they already had one in Asia last year. The Olympic should be trying to be more global and spread to other areas of the world as well. Also no Madrid either for me because they will have one in Europe in 2012.

From what I've heard, both Madrid and Tokyo should be at high disadvantage. Madrid because 2012 games will be in London, thus it's fairly difficult they would assign two consecutive Olympics to Europe. Tokyo for more or less the same reason, since just in 2008 the Games took place in Beijing.

Judging from the last 30 years you can see how they usually switch between different continents. Europe already had 2 close calls, so I think it won't do. America (meant as the whole continent) doesn't host Olympics Games since the longest time span, 20 years (---> from 2016).
Hence I think it will be a race between Chicago and Rio. South America never hosted the Olympics, so it wouldn't be bad to give them a chance if their project is worthy. I'm always for opening to new places/populations when possible. A minus for Rio might be that Fifa World Cup 2014 was already assigned to Brazil, I believe it would be unusual to see the same country hosting both Fifa World Cup and Olympics in the span of two years. Anyway, we'll see.

I'm just fascinated by their predilection for choosing from cities with some of the worst air pollution and most potential for traffic gridlock on the planet.

I read some brief history about modern olympics and I think only the XXIII, XXVI, and XXVII host cities actually profited or didn't get into too much debt. I wonder if the XXXI can pull it off without massive cost overruns~

I would like Tokyo but I'm thinking Brazil, just because it's a place I haven't seen or heard of much at all. Of course by 2016 I'll probably be able to go to Tokyo so if I can, then hell ya Tokyo!

I know a lot of people in Chicago that dreed the possibility that the Olympics would come because the Downtown area would have key streets blocked off for years...

That being said, I don't live there (though I often visit and stay there), so it's no skin off my nose :)...

I think that Rio would have the edge over Tokyo, and Chicago and Madrid are behind them. I haven't heard of many people here in Tokyo - aside from the politicians - going "Yeah! We want the Olympics!", though.

Giving the 2016 Olympics to South America would be a better PR move for the Committee - although I'm not entirely sure of Rio's finances to actually support it - since one has never been hosted on that continent. As mg1942 said, few modern day Olympics actually made a profit; most went into cost overruns.

OTOH, having another Olympics hosted in Asia could also be used to drum up/nail down additional support in this region, which at the moment and IMHO, looks to be the near future growth area for sports.

Hah. Sad, but true. I fear for the riders' safety on the subways and trains come rush hour in Tokyo. It's not so bad during the day, but during the morning and evening rush hours, it's "cheek to jowl" packing. :p
