Quote:

The protagonist, Masaru, has just inherited a big fortune after the death of his father. However, people are trying to get their hands on it by any means necessary, even if it means killing him. Narumi helped Masaru from being kidnapped after fighting some weird guys. He found out that they're not humans but wooden puppets with amazing strength. After a hard fight, Narumi was forced to admit that he's no opponent for them; and just when he started to think that Masaru would be captured, Shirogane, Masaru's watcher arrives from France with a weapon, the puppet Arlequin. English Scantalations don't exist for about half the manga or 25 of 43 volumes. Now whether you're fluent in Japanese or not and just skimmed through raws you couldn't actually read doesn't matter.

This anime version is not the manga. It's going to be a heavily restructured version of the story. As such we don't know how balanced the three main characters will be in regards to relevancy and overall screen-time. Even more so than Ushio and Tora was due to its increased length, whole arcs will need to be either cut out entirely or heavily streamlined in order to tell a story in the 20ish hours they have to work with.

Definitely one of the better premieres imo for the season.

It captured the mood of the show well in terms of presentation. The character designs similarity to Ushio to Tora is also noticable considering it's by the same creator. This show has some unusual humor that I think works overall. There's emotional moments too already from the first episode.

Then, there's Masaru and Narumi, two prominent characters that we get to know. I wonder how much background story will be focused this season though as it's fairly important. But I think the first episode is quite promising. The theme songs are also great. Bump of Chicken delivers again.

That was really quite fun and a strong first episode.

The dynamic and main characters worked for me out of the gate. Masaru has plenty of room to grow as a character, but I like how he did step right before the rescue by Shirogane. Talk about a nightmare for the kid. His father almost certainly murdered, he has to go on the run, and is attacked by some scary things that have no qualms about derailing a train to get him.

Narumi is both badass and an amusing guy. Why not give him a crazy illness that requires him getting people to laugh in order to stay alive? I'm just going to wait for the eventual crisis where his last hope is to get Shirogane to laugh :heh:.

Shirogane herself is a girl of extremes. In a sense she's very tsun to anyone that could be a potential threat to Masaru and very dere when it comes to the kid. Her situation is certainly the most mysterious right now. It is a fair question of why this girl was left working at a circus. Why only have Masaru find her in a crisis instead of having her act as a bodyguard at all times?

Good first episode. Have a feeling I'm really going to enjoy this show.

That was a good start. Felt like the episode didn't waste any time.

Not much to say about the plot since there simply isn't much to go on yet, but the main characters made a good impression on me. Very curious to see how things will develop between Narumi and Shirogane. Right now they dislike each other but understand they share a common goal which is protecting Masaru.

I loved the first episode and it was fun hearing Tora again.

Spoiler for ep1:

I wasn't planning on watching this series, since it didn't look like the kind of show that will interest me, but I got bored and gave the first ep a try....and I was glad I did. I agree with others that this was a good first episode. Looking forward to seeing how this will unfold.

Wandering Soul 2018-10-11 23:28

I have to agree with all of the above posts: it was a good first episode.

The three main characters seem like a good set so far. I'm curious as to how the whole "make people laugh" disease will play out.

How bad was it?

I was pleasantly surprised by this anime. It looks really intriguing. I don't think we've had too many anime that portray karakuris. The two most notable instances for me are in Naruto, and Yu-Gi-Oh (there's a whole archetype of Karakuri cards).

At first, I thought this was some generic circus anime, but it's got a great plot and setup. The girl looks really cute in her form fitting outfit and her silver hair and eyes makes her look even more badass.

As for the smiling/laughter is the best medicine, I'm not entirely sold on Narumi's condition. It's definitely weird and wacky, but somehow fits the bill because he's in the business to make people happy, which is why his "selfish" actions are actually for the greater good.

Haak 2018-10-15 12:14

That was an interesting first episode.

But let's be honest: everything about that train crash scene was beyond ludicrous...

Nivek von Beldo 2018-10-15 16:01

Well this one was hyped and for good reason, a old school very well done shonen and the introduction was nice, show the main trio and their adventure, hope masaru become a puppeter too soon, so he can't be a load for a long time.

Amazing series, simple very well done

(the intro make me belive was studio geno, but this one use the bike intro too)
