SimCity General Thread

Wow. You know that this game is old -- and is in long need of development (for the next edition) -- when there isn't even a thread in here. :uhoh: Quite frankly, I'm sick of Cityville. But, it's the next best thing in existence for now, when it comes to "city simulators".

Anyways. It's been a long long long looooooooooooong time since SimCity 4. I had enjoyed both 2000 and 3000 back in the day.

Well, rumor exists for a SimCity 5.

About time. Let's hope this rumor is true. I'd say SimCity 4 was the best city sim game ever (societies was a failure imo), but even then I'd get bored with the same game over and over again. I've played Cities XL later on too, it was decent and got me to quite a nostalgic feeling (city sims are rarities indeed).

A new SimCity game? Oh how long has it been since I last played one :heh:

I lost my original SimCity 4 CD. However, with the intention of using SimCity to teach an ESL class -- I wanted to use the game. So, I bought a new copy of SimCity 4... only to find many original features gone - like those ground level expressways. WTF! :uhoh::twitch::frustrated:

Oh well, there went 10 bucks. Whatever.

Kameruka 2012-02-29 17:41

I think the best Simcity game I ever played is the 3000 one. More complex than second one(2000) and not as complex as 4. Plus the jazz music in 3000 really good.

They added the ground level highways in the expansion pack IIRC.

Anyway I have played Simcity 2k, 3k and 4 extensively love them, my favourite one is 4 if only because of the toll roads (finally I can exploit the mass car drivers :heh:)

There's another version of the above trailer here which features a little "Insider's Look" segment after that explain some of the elements included in the video. Call me a bit old-school, but I'm not sure if I really want random people building cities in the same region as me, and having to work with them on collaborative goals. So I hope there's some sort of single-player mode that lets you just exist in your own world if you want to.

Other than that, totally looking forward to this game. I've been a big fan ever since I played the original as a kid, and still jump into SimCity 4 every once in a while and get lost in it for hours. 2013 can't come soon enough...

TJR 2012-03-07 04:23

I've only played the original SimCity (20+ years ago). Would SC4 be accessible to a beginner?

EA's official descriptor suggests that SimCity will be an "online only" multiplayer game supporting 1-16 players. Normally, I'd interpret that as confirmation of a single player option, but some MMORPG and social game developers are now promoting their games as solo friendly (which is usually true until you reach a point where you can't continue without help from other players) to attract the broadest range of personality types.

And so. It is official:

EA has made it official: SimCity is back.

Now, for some more things to look forward to in this game.

Quote:

EA says that the development team consists of many veterans from SimCity 2000 and SimCity 4. It will also - wait for it - feature curved roads. Yes.

Another new feature for the game is the fact these cities are, for the first time (well, since some driving games we won't mention) in full 3D.

The new SimCity also has a feature called "Social Flow", which is the term for how your city will affect other people's cities. For example, resources are finite, and decisions you make - and technological advances other make - will impact the development of your own metropolis.
Europeans in particular should be pleased with the curved roads as their cities do not conform to the grid-lock style as American cities.

Maxis is actually making a proper SimCity here
If this game does go right back to its proper roots -- then it could potentially surpass all previous editions. I sure hope so.

And a trailer:

One thing I noticed: buildings in angled positions. City design will be ever more dynamic. :3

Bad news is that it is multiplayer online ONLY. According to Origin:
http://store.origin.com/store/eaapac...Page.SimcityAU

So I am out. I flat out refuse to play games that need constant connection to the internet. Especially when I want to play alone.

RRW 2012-03-07 05:04

ehh isnt that multiplayer always online (especially on PC)

It is multiplayer ONLY. As in, I can only play psudo-single player by starting a one-player game online.

In short, this isn't Simcity 5; this is SimCity Online.

RRW 2012-03-07 05:51

ehh you link is broken. according to websites FAQ it have sandbox mode

Ah, but no offline mode. Click "Game features".

Multi Player 1-16
Online Only
Genre: Simulation
Release Date: 2013
Developers: Maxis Emeryville
Publisher: Electronic Arts
The link works fine for me. Perhaps you need to be in Australia? Just look up the game in your own version of Origin store.

Further, I just checked the FAQ. It said NOTHING about single player anywhere. Instead, multiplayer is repeated over and over. Sandbox, yes, but not offline.

Ithekro 2012-03-07 13:58

Wasn't that the Spore model? Sandbox Online?

-Sho- 2012-03-07 14:00

No you can play alone too , it's 1-16 players. Just that we need to be online like Diablo.

Anyway , it's been a long time , this one looks promising.

Ithekro 2012-03-07 14:06

My guess it might be the game publishers are attempting to push Internet technology in an effort to get other places of the world to upgrade to "practically contiuous online status", such as DSL or cable modems...or even higher tech wireless systems.

Xellos-_^ 2012-03-07 14:10

no chance i get this. I hate games that require you to be constantly connected to play. No way, no hell, Maxis can kiss my money goodby.

TJR 2012-03-07 14:18

Ultimately, it's a DRM scheme to protect their own interests. You can probably think of it as a caveat to developing a PC-exclusive game these days, although there are signs that consoles may soon head in a similar direction.

As a gamer, I haven't been affected by any of the drawbacks (of Steam integration, online activation, permanent connection requirement, etc.) yet. However, long-term archival becomes less viable as our games become increasingly dependent on a particular infrastructure.
