Star Trek: Discovery

"It’s only logical it would come to this. The rejuvenation of Star Trek on
the big screen, eventually, had to do the same for the franchise’s native
medium, television. And after months of rumors and speculation, it’s
actually happening—Star Trek is coming back to TV.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Alex Kurtzman, co-writer of 2009’s
Star Trek and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, will executive produce a
new Star Trek show through CBS Television Studios.

The show will premiere in January 2017 with a preview episode on CBS
and then, in the U.S., move exclusively to the CBS video on-demand and
streaming service, CBS All Access. It’ll be the first developed specifically
for the CBS streaming service."

Online/subscription exclusive? Then it's not really a TV series (for the US, at least), ugh.

FlareKnight 2015-11-03 02:05

Certainly I don't love that CBS is basically using Star Trek in order to try and sell their subscription service.

But, if that means they will tackle this thing like they give a damn and produce a good show...I'll survive it.

In the end I'm glad to know that Star Trek is coming back in some form. Coming back to the kind of venue that it frankly works best as. Movies are great for the visuals and action, but honestly you lose some of what made Star Trek what it was when you have to condense things down to a couple hours.

This could be a bust, but darn it if I don't want to hope. Really did enjoy watching the various series growing up and this could be a nice return.

Solace 2015-11-03 07:35

All it means is that people will pirate it. That's all these ever increasing number of paid subscription services are going to make people do at some point. Here's an example where people would go "I'm not signing up just for that".

hell yeah new startrek... so which captain.. I'm curious about Earth Romulan War...

monster 2015-11-05 22:38

This series is supposedly made by the same person/people who made the most recent two movies, but I also read that the series would not be related to the third upcoming movie. So I'm curious whether it will be in the same universe as the other TV series and older movies or whether it will be in the new movie universe.

Still not much clue.

The style in the teaser is very much like the ending credits style in the new films.

Rumor has it that it will not follow just one crew every season, just shift eras and the like.

If this deal had included the US, it would've been perfect for me. Oh well.

Ithekro 2016-07-18 09:16

There is a US cable channel that will start showing all the Star Trek series starting the 24th of July. I just don't remember the channel.

You mean in 2016? Then that's probably only for the existing shows, not for the upcoming show.

Ithekro 2016-07-18 09:51

For the existing shows.

Nerroth 2016-07-18 12:31

From what I can tell, Canada is the only country where the new series will be aired in its entirety on television. CTV (one of the major Canadian broadcast networks) will air the pilot episode, while Space (a cable network, and Canada's closest equivalent to SyFy) will air the remaining episodes. Plus there will be separate channels handling the French-language broadcast.

Which is interesting, since the show is set to be made at Pinewood Toronto Studios.

The new series will be named Star Trek Discovery and the main ship is U.S.S. Discovery.

CrowKenobi 2016-07-23 20:23

Fun fact: the Discovery's design is based upon one of Ralph McQuarrie's original concept designs for the updated Enterprise for a Star Trek movie in 1976-77 (which also was snuck into the background of the aftermath of the Battle of Wolf 359 in STTNG).

LoweGear 2016-07-23 23:29

Well, they took it down (odd since it's hosted by the very Star Trek site itself)... so here's an alternative host of the vid:

Dynamic tag cannot be rendered. (PrintableThread)
As for the design of the ship, it's definitely based off the early concepts of the USS Enterprise for Star Trek Phase II.

That is ugly, I'm trying to find a angle I like but I just don't see it. I saw the original design a long time ago in one of the many mods for Star Trek Bridge Commander. Oh well I'm sure I will learn to love her like all ships

Initials aside, the three-character designations that I've seen for the previous shows are TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. I'm not sure if those are official designations and I don't remember where I saw them, but if they are official, then this one would probably be DIS.

Considering Kirk's amorous escapades across the Galaxy, "STD" seems
strangely appropriate. :)

Note the Discovery's hull number: NCC-1031

Which puts it between Capt. Archer's Enterprise (NX-01)

and the Enterprise from the original series (NCC-1701)

So, I guess that means the show will be set somewhere between
Archer's time and Kirk's time.

Wouldn't this be approximately the same time period that the "Axanar"
movie is set in?

This might partially explain some of CBS's hostility to the movie.
