Sabagebu

The original announcement was actually some time ago: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...nime-green-lit

The October issue of Kodansha's Nakayoshi shōjo magazine is announcing on September 3 that a TV anime adaptation of Hidekichi Matsumoto's Sabagebu! (short for Survival Game Club!) has been green-lit for 2014. Masahiko Ohta (Yuruyuri - Happy Go Lily) will direct the anime from scripts by Takashi Aoshima (Kotoura-san).

The story of the original manga revolves around Momoka Sonokawa, a girl who transferred into a certain girls' high school. The club she ended up joining at school was the "Sabagebu!," a club that conducts survival games.

Matsumoto began the manga in the magazine in 2011, and Kodansha will ship the 5th compiled volume in September. Matsumoto's Honto ni Atta! Reibai-Sensei manga was also adapted into an anime in 2011.

There was recently a promotional video stream for the series put up on the site:

Ayaka Ohashi, Lynn, Nao Tōyama, Rumi Ookubo, and Yumi Uchiyama star in summer series.

The official website for anime adaptation of Hidekichi Matsumoto's Sabagebu! manga began streaming a promotional video. The video introduces the series' cast.

The beginning of the video features the main characters' self-introductions, and says it's a "fun, cute girls comedy."

Momoka: I'm Momoka Sonokawa, a first year in high school. I somehow ended up joining Aogiri Academy's survival club.
Miō: It sounds like you're doing a self-introduction.
Momoka: It is a self introduction!
Miō: 3rd year, Mio Ootori. Club president. ...By the way, you over there: are you interested in survival games?
Urara: Urara Kasugano, first year. Aa, at any rate Miō-sama... you look pretty today, too!
Maya: Maya Kyōdō, second year. Besides survival games, I have a part time job as a model. Nice to meet you!
Kayo: Kayo Gōtokuji, first year. Suitable regards.
Kamo-chan: ...

Masahiko Ohta (Yuruyuri - Happy Go Lily) will direct the anime from scripts by Takashi Aoshima (Kotoura-san) at Pierrot Plus (Beelzebub, Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee). Masashi Kudo will design the characters.

Spoiler for Episode 1:

tsunade666 2014-06-29 02:06

its airing already?

is it translated? because I haven't seen a english release for this one yet which is why it surprised me.

I don't check anime time slots to know which is being shown and when is being shown. I just check on what is being released in english.

EroKing 2014-06-29 11:39

English subs for pre-aired episode 1 is out.

Dynamic tag cannot be rendered. (PrintableThread) Looks interesting...

Dop 2014-06-29 11:44

There's now a sub of the pre-air kicking around in the usual places, so I gave it a look.

Seems this isn't going to be a show that takes itself seriously in any way, so could be fun, but at this stage there's really nothing much to distance it from that other survival game club show we had recently.

Hopefully the second episode will be where the show really establishes its identity.

FredFriendly 2014-06-29 14:40

Ugh! Six minutes into the first episode and dropped like a hot potato. Too bad. The first five minutes looked interesting enough; well the MC did, in any case. Bondage is just not my cup of tea, regardless of the rationalization.

ookamigirl 2014-06-29 14:57

The train part was fun ^^
So... girls with guns.
This kinda reminded me of Upotte.
But this is obviously different.
Sonokawa was awesome.
Don't know what to think about this anime.
Strange, yet appealing.
Maybe I'll give it a few more episodes.

To those that watched this, but didn't enjoy it. Did you read any of the manga? No? Why try an adaptation when you have zero familiarity with the source material? You'll save yourself a lot of time if you just do a bit of research beforehand.

Look into it. Give it a try. Most adaptations (not all mind you) tend to follow it. You'll know exactly what to expect before watching any of the anime and therefore will have a pretty good idea whether or not it's for you. It's very simple. X manga/LN/VN what have is getting a show! Have you read//played the source? If no, give it a try. Did you like what you read/played? Great! The shows extremely likely to be the same thing. You didn't enjoy it? Too bad. Try something else.

Hm...
Momoka and Miou somehow remind me of those two girl from Binbougami Ga...

Please don't imply that people should be forced to read the source material before giving an anime a chance, or shouldn't be allowed to have negative opinions based on trying a show at random. If people want to just take the show as it comes and see what they get, they can do that if they want -- even though the result may be random due to no research or clear expectations. Obviously there's nothing wrong with doing your research and picking only shows you already figure you have a good chance in liking (it's what I generally do myself), but it's not a requirement. Some people prefer to give everything a random chance and come in with as little preconceptions as possible. Don't need to get defensive just because people didn't know what to expect.

Now, once people understand the sort of show it is after watching it for a while, then turning around and complaining that the whole genre/style/approach isn't what they want can get sort of tedious. But I think it's totally legit to allow impressions from newcomers giving the show a try at random. Some of them will end up liking it.

^ this. I don't see why someone should feel a pressing need to pick up the source material nor do I understand the need of some people to try and push the source material onto viewers. If I pick up a medium, I do not necessarily want to know all the is to it. Ain't nobody got time for that.
Especially if I'm not sure I like it, or just about like it. Why should I feel forced to consult the source before watch something? That is absurd.
This is entertainment, I'm not grading essays. If I don't like what I'm seeing, why should I go read more about it or inform myself thoroughly what I'm just looking to try out?
(Personally, I only ever pick up the source material these days if I really, really like a story and am very interested in it. I can't even remember the last time I picked up a work I found so-so or just good. Even for some excellent adaptions that I really loved, I don't feel the need to go read the source.)

That said, I loved this. Wasn't even planning on watching this, but I'm glad I did :D great first episode, definitely will be watching at least the next few..! really loving the humour and quirkiness.
Thought it was another typical seiner moe snorefest, but gave it a try after reading where this is serialised.
If it stays this funny, this could turn into a little hidden gem :)

Nope, and because of what I saw of the anime, I won't be doing so. The synopsis I read (which is how I decide to watch most shows, whether they be anime-original or based on a previous work) made it seem like something that I might find enjoyable. The train scene was pretty amusing, and the MC seemed likable enough, but my interest in the show vanished as soon as we got into the clubhouse.

I pretty much agree with relentlessflame's post, but I admit that there have been some anime shows for which I have read the source material that, at first, seemed like decent adaptations of the original, but ended up so annoyingly different by the end of the series that I would end up complaining. At least with this show, you won't hear me moaning about it again.

Spoiler for Episode 1:

For now, it's a fun ride, and I guess I can trust the production staff in the humor department.

Master_Yoma 2014-06-29 21:27

Well a nice start with anther girl with pellet guns but it nice a funny and Miou is a werido

Hoping that this dosnt turn out like C3

Anime299 2014-06-29 23:17

Fabulous! Snarky narrator unwilling to fill in all the details, Dirty Harry reference, timing like Love Lab....what's not to like? I'm in for the duration if they keep doing things like this.

Come to think of it, this show is the anti-thesis of C3-bu... I mean, the former got serious so I hope Sabagebu is the opposite!

jeroz 2014-07-01 07:04

Some chuckles from me at the weirdest places ("we shared a toast together"), but overall it's not really that outstanding at this point. The visual is really weak. There's just no one memorable moment from this episode unlike the director's previous work. It's full of oddball comedy, which may take a while to get used to. Just not that enthused for now.

I still find it amusing how FredFriendly dropped the show straight away despite the scene he was uncomfortable with didn't last that long. Then again different people have different things that tend to tick them off so I can't really judge.

areyoubaka 2014-07-01 10:52

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't one of the girls use a pair of Škorpions, the same gun Yura used?
That aside, I'm liking the more humorous nature of Sabagebu! in comparison to C3 Club; let's hope it keeps that nature.

Maverick Entity 2014-07-01 14:48

She used what appeared to be Mac 10s (though I could be getting it confused with mini uzi, artwork not the best for that).

I read what little I could of the manga beforehand quite some time ago, and was excited for the anime with hopes that it would spur more translation of the manga, like what had happened for C3-bu. My eagerness died when it became apparent that everything had changed. The narrator, one character of the club just gone, the sudden shift to "imaginary" real firearm sounds and mechanics.

It seems clear the anime team did not believe the original material would appeal without all the changes, but as an airsofter at heart I liked seeing airsoft pellets whizzing past characters, the sounds of the aeg's and gbb pistols, and everything else that C3-bu brought to bear. I honestly do not feel I could lob the two together, because even though C3-bu played on imagination, at least it did so without going full "guns, bullets, and blood" all over the place.

I just feel sad that now it's become something else, even with the humor. The original material had humor itself (there was a "fashion" contest between the club and what I assumed was a rival boys club that was quite funny), but that is all up and gone.

Baldurkai 2014-07-03 12:03

This anime was a real surprise for me, normally i would overlook something like this but after the first episode i for one am looking forward to the next episode. Hopefully its fully of the wacky humor as shown in the first episode, and this reminds me a lot of Upotte as well.
