Btw, I second Major if you want to watch that father - son scene. You will cry multiple times when watching the 1st season. For the 2nd and 3rd season maybe you'll cry only at the end...
And I want to recommend PlanetEs.. The scene near the end is very touching and maybe falls into the sacrifice situation. |
Umm... School Days is not comedy. I wouldn't recommend watching it as a tragedy either, I'd put the series in its own category. (the EFFED UP category)
I would definitely recommend: Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien (triangle tragedy) Kanon (downright heartbreaking) Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (bittersweet tragedy) ef - A Tale of Memories (still ongoing, but the story is quite beautiful) Also, I wouldn't recommend Saikano. I feel like the sadness is very forced. |
Kannon i don't have to say anymore.
|
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien is a tear-jerker
Well, made me cry anyway. It's a very sad storyline but it's still good |
just finished ef- a tale of memories
try watching it, its very good and balanced the tragic/heartwarming moments |
Blue Drop ended up being quite a heartbreaker. A really, really great show on several levels.
|
thank ...ill sit with these for a while

HMMM I think I am late. I'd say Barefoot Gen is a tragic one, even if it has a hopeful ending, it kinda messes with you throughout the movie. And then the sequel comes along and just messes with you further by taking away other parts that you were left with.
It's a WWII Hiroshima one. Old classic. And freakin hard to find on DVD too. |
oh i forgot:
grave of the fireflies - if this doesnt evoke even a tear from you, i dont know what will |

But back to the thread topic, I'd like to add The Place Promised in Our Early Days, if no one's already mentioned it. It may not be brutally tragic, but it's Shinkai Makoto's first feature film (before 5 Centimeters per Second, which is also an excellent suggestion for the thread), so you can expect a few waterworks. |
Only two of you suggested Grave of the Fireflies, and one doing so having forgotten to mention it earlier?
Come on, guys. When you think of depressing anime that makes you want to cry, Grave Of The Fireflies really should be the first thing that comes to anybody's mind. Now, why anybody would cry and be depressed over the actual tragedy content of Elfen Lied instead of its utter failure as a horror outing is beyond me. Guts' back story is more tear jerking than Kouta's or Lucy's can ever be. |
Kanon 2k6, Clannad, Air -- in that order.
I'd suggest Clannad, because it's great. *look at sig* |
i'm reving this thread because i am also in a mood for tragedy
i would appreciate it if i can get more tear jerker recommendations |

haha 2 of my thread are back from the dead....for a tear jerker...i think Hanbun no tsuki ga noboru sora might suit you.....or grave of fireflies(alot of people go on about how sad it is....i didnt think it was all that sad)...sainkano was pretty sad....a couple scenes were really good...youll know when you see them.....
im still looking for the end all..."make me cry like a little b!@#$"....series or movie....nothing yet...im still looking...konan 2k6 just got finished downloading and im really hopin that might do me in....and im currently Downloading "samuri x" that one ruroni kenshin thingy....alot of people say its a masterpiece |
I definitely second Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora and SaiKano. Grave of the Fireflies is sad, but on a different level and type of sadness. I also recommend Kimi ga Nozomu Eien like always.

I want/expect to cry, I doubt you will :) For me, it's the mood before watching that counts
|
I'd recommend Blood + and Fushigi Yuugi, both series made me cry a lot and they do fit your bill.
