Weird... I don't find Elfen Lied or Lord of the Flies tragic at all :// (not at all depressing)

To repeat a post I've made some time ago, have you seen SaiKano yet? That is probably the most tragic anime I have seen.

I also didn't find Lord of the Flies very tragic or sad at all, but I never liked Piggy in the first place.

Speaking of which, I have to rewatch Tsuiokuhen because I haven't seen it since I was small(er).

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora has one of those endings in which you know you shouldn't be sad, but you still are.

Seconding+ Air and Kanon 2006 as good Key-KyoAni works.
Kanon isn't really what I'd call a "tragedy", though it's not a happy anime.

Seconding+ 5 Centimeters per Second and Voices of a Distant Star as saddening, though again, not necessarily tragedies. The Place Promised in our Early Days isn't something I would group with the other two in terms of "sadness", but its themes are similar with its presentation different. I found it to be more of a "touching" movie than a "tragic" one.

Seconding+ ef ~ a tale of memories as a good anime series, though it's not as sad as some others here.
And in my opinion, Tenmon's work in ef far exceeded his work in 5 Centimeters per Second.

Seconding+ Elfen Lied. It has the potential to be sad, depending on how you interpret some of the events.

Also seconding+ Sola. If you can keep up with it, the ending is similar to another one mentioned in this thread sporadically.

Fate Stay Night made me feel how you were describing in the end. Even though it's mostly action, they develop character relations pretty well. So I say give it a try.

One way to get really sad is watching the Clannad movie after watching the series.
I did and wouldn't recomend it.
But then the topic is crying and feeling something tragic, so it kind of fits.

I think the word I'd use to describe it is 'sobering' - I think it's safe to say, whatever problems you think you have in your life, are nowhere near as bad as the ones you see on screen. Watching this, you realize the fragility of life and you can emerge from this film, thankful for what you have.

LOL.. I'm not sure this fits what you are looking for but I recently watch an anime that was made around 1999 called Crest of the Stars it was good but it doesnt get sad until the third season..

As a Japanese I must insist on "A Dog of Flanders" to be placed on the list.
I have heard of a study that people of age 35 and over will start shedding tears through conditioned reflex just watching the first ten seconds of the last scene accompanied by Ave Maria.
Another heart warming "Masterpiece theater series" that brings tears to your eyes is "3000 Leagues in Search of Mother".

One of the most tragic scenes I've seen that has brought me near to tears is Gunbuster.

I think it stands out in my mind even more because it comes at you from the side and there's no way you'll see it coming. In addition, it is a very unique kind of tragedy yet it leaves a satisfied feeling in the end.

yeah I have seen saikano, I was just a bit surprise to what happen to the girl. Then honestly, it a bit sad but also sometime boring

Scrapped Princess was quite sad IMO...I wouldn't want to be hated/hunted by the ENTIRE world O_o

Definately Fushigi Yuuji, one of the most heart tearing scenes I've ever seen was in this show.

I think I'm the only one that'll ever recommend this, but Aishiterzu Baby, everytime that little munchkin Yuzuyu bust out the tears, I can't help but break out the water works. Its about a little girl (4 or 5 IIRC ), that got abandoned by her mother, and her cousin is raising her. Its basically dealing with the trials a child deals with abandonment.

Oh forgot to mention, Ayashi no Ceres, thats another good one.
