Windows 8 DCP_WATCHDOG and Internet
 

So, I've recently upgraded my venerable XP to Windows 8.

After installation everything switches on, I go through the menus, I check out the desktop, set a new image...everything works fine. Fluid, even.

And then I plugged in my internet cable.

The result was a more-or-less instantaneous crash, followed by DCP_Watchdog error message, and restart...which wouldn't work until I physically removed the cable from my computer.

Being not-quite-computer-savvy, I have absolutely no idea what's going on. The computer works completely fine besides that.

Appreciate any help or tips.
(Just for clarification - I'm using my laptop now, which is connected to one of the "boxes" [European, and French users especially will probably know what I'm talking about, dunno about states] with ADSL landline connection. The same to which I tried connection my computer to).

I presume it is a desktop then. Perhaps drivers? Bios update?

Yes, it's desktop.

I dunno honestly. Ethernet cable controler...thing...should be up to date, so should be everything else really.

It's like the ethernet cable just being plugged into it causes the crash.
There is literally nothing else on the computer that does this.

The best is to download the drivers from the manufacturer of your motherboard or network card (wired or wireless), especially Win8-compatible drivers, provided that you know the exact product model; don't use the ones that came through Windows Update (as some of them could be iffy).

BTW, what's the specs of your PC?

1 Terrabyte harddrive, Intel(r)Core(TM)2 CPU 6700 2.66GHz, 3GB Ram, 2.75 of which is "useable". Also Nvidia GeForce 250GTS for graphics.

I'm trying to find the drivers for my network card, but actual determination what it is, is nigh impossible. Network adapters setion in Device Manager shows Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (which is the latest Windows-8 version I manually installed); the other device is Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapter, for which I can't find drivers to save my life.

My motherboard is Asus P5B-BN apparently. Veeeerrryyyyy old.

oh, men! you need update hardware your motherboard support until windows 7, honestly i don't know much about windows 8 but, each version of Windows requires recent hardware.

That is added in windows 8 and really doesn't need an updated driver.

Also are you sure that the error message said DCP_Watchdog or was it DPC_Watchdog since I did a quick google and the only results that were returned was for a DPC_Watchdog_Violation for which there is a fix for.

...right, it's DPC_WATCHDOG VIOLATION.

Stupid me. Guess I was too excited.

Now, I tried to make a complete reinstall (had computer remove all old files from upgrade, make a fresh installation), and it failed completely - it continuously crashes on setup with Watchdog violation. So now, I don't even have an O.S

This is beyond ridiculous. Before anyone asks, yes, the computer does meet the hardware requirements.\

EDIT: I was able to complete the set-up...once I plugged out my ethernet cable.

EDIT II: I was finally able to solve the problem, after installing Asus Updater and running BIOS update. Curiosly, the update didn't load properly when computer restarted, but when I loaded it on default BIOS settings (F2) and plugged the cable, everything went fine.
