Sword Art Online: Progressive Anime News & Anticipation

This is a thread for the Sword Art Online: Progressive anime that was recently announced. This is a news & speculation thread which means NO SPOILERS -- even behind spoiler tags. While novel/manga readers can talk about what people can expect in very broad/general terms (like below), do not reveal specific future events or characters in this thread.

What is SAO: Progressive?
Progressive is a re-telling of the Aincrad arc of Sword Art Online that follows Kirito and Asuna as they advance through the dungeon floors progressively (hence the name) from the beginning. Although it deviates in some ways from the original story, the author says this retelling is still intended to fit into the existing SAO canon. The story introduces new characters and plot arcs that fill in some of the details of the world of Aincrad and the backstory of some characters and plot threads existing readers/viewers already know. The author said that his intention is to eventually cover all floors in order, but at this time the story is still in the very early floors.

It's time to return to Aincraid :D.

Sign me up. I still feel like the first arc was the best story this franchise had. A much more involved story of that seems like a dream come true.

Honestly thought the story moved way too quickly and there was so much potential in that setting. Even what we got there was great, but there was room to do so much more with it. And this story will let us have exactly that.

Only so many ways to say "yes please" when it comes to this.

I'm hoping for a new Opening from LiSa and a new Ending from Haruka Tomatsu :D.

Please just cover at least through the Third Floor in season 1. I need some Kizmel (sp?).

I'm looking forward to more Argo :).

Argo's a guarantee though. She shows up in like every other chapter.

It probably depends on how they pace it out and how many cours it gets but I wouldn't be surprised if we get to Floor 3 since most adaptions usually cover at least the first two or three volumes in the first cour.

Yeah, it really depends on how much fluff they put in the beginning, if they cover floor 1 again, etc.

What I’m wondering is if they will show the floors that are in season 1. Like the 1st floor boss fight again. They would be able to expand the details more.

I think they kind of have to remake the story of clearing floor 1 if they're going to accurately adapt the novels.

They could re-frame the new take as being from Asuna's perspective (even if the actual events will still look mostly different).

Looks like it will be a movie

That...would be kind of disappointing. But I guess it would save them the trouble of running out of material to adapt if they turn each floor into it's own movie that comes out sporadically :eyebrow:.

Looks like it will only cover first half of Vol 1

GDB 2020-11-08 16:01

Wow, so not even covering the stuff that actually makes Progressive interesting.

Pass.

I think going more in-depth with Floor 1 and framing it from Asuna's perspective like the manga did is a good way to start it off :).

I think the bigger question is if they plan to do a movie per Floor or move into an actual tv anime for the rest, but I could see them making a series of movies for each Progressive volume (which might lead to long waits between movies but would give Kawahara time to put out more Progressive material).

AP24 2020-11-08 20:22

Considering it only covers less than half of the volume then I wouldn't be surprised if it's only about an hour long

zeross87 2020-11-15 04:25

i can't belive it's a movie it's like the antithesis of what progressive is (slow and steady following them on every quest). how can a very time limited format fit that kind of settings, it make no sens ?
