Xbox 360 Spring Update brings MP4 support as of today

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/...07/0408-im.htm

# Added H.264 video support: Up to 10 Mbps peak, Baseline, Main, and High profiles with 2 channel AAC LC.

# Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 5 Mbps peak, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC.

I've not had a chance to test this out today yet but here are some URL's where discussion is taking place in regards to it:

Hope this is of some help and/or interest to everyone!

This is a step in the right direction, but it's a shame they do not support ASP. Then again on the other hand it may help push H.264 adoption so I won't really complain.

One thing I will comment on is the bitrate limit. I don't really understand why it's only 10mbps. What is limiting it? Surely it's not the DVD drive (unless for some reason it will only read at 1x for video files, perhaps to keep noise low or the read rate consistant), and secondly, I thought the CPU in the 360 was supposed to be pretty fast, so I can't see that 10mbps H.264 would be that much of a struggle. My laptop is fine with 20+mbps 1080p H.264, and that's 2x2.0 GHz.

Also no 5.1 LC-AAC is a dissapointment.

I'm frustrated. No one seems to want to fully implement anything these days.

/me adds MS to the list with Sony and Apple.

Good news though, I just hate to sound negative. With a bit of luck they may add it at a later date. One thing though, those who complained their PC was too slow to play H.264 fansubs but have a 360 can't complain now :)

Sure they can, there's no Matroska or ASS support.

One day... one day.

P.S. I have a HTS which says it supports SSA/ASS (external only of course). Blew my mind, though I've yet to bother with testing its lameness. I'll bet it skimps on any effects.

Heh, they don't even support XVID because "it's not really a true industry standard", and you think that MKV and ASS will ever get supported?

Keep dreaming.

Well you may have forgotten Xvid players are already coming out now, yes actual Xvid and not DivX fake'ness. Though even under the DivX "standard" most Xvid files (without any GMC) should play fine.

Here is the manual for my Home Theater System. Phear the powah! Check out the bottom right of page 32. There are a few limitations but let your mind be blown. Since this was a pretty cheap player I would only hope the real monster HTS's could have better support.
