Fairy Tail Manga Discussion Thread
Before you say anything, I did NOT mess up that title. :p
Did anyone read this yet? Well, I suppose few have, since the first chapter is due out in Japan in next week's (or was it this week's?) Shounen Magazine. :) The mangaka is Mashima Hiro. Anyway, I read through it, and I must say I liked it. I didn't stop to translate every word I didn't understand but I think I understood most of the plot. Anyway, it's your typical shounen manga. The setting is some kind of medieval fantasy world, though not without some modern luxuries. Naruto has ninjas, One Piece has pirates, Bleach has shinigamis, so what does Fairy Tail have? Sorcerers. The plot seems to revolve around sorcerers, and the guilds they make up. Fairy Tail is one such guild. The main characters introduced in the first chapter are Natsu, who seems to have an affinity for travel sickness, his companion Happy, the cat and the girl Lucy, who really really wants to join Fairy Tail. This was a nice surprise. The new project of the mangaka of Rave Master XD Hehehe... While one is reading this, you WILL realize that there's a lot of commonalities between it, Rave Master and One Piece XD Hehehe... I really liked the first chapter. Maybe I'll talk to my scan group if whether we might take it up :P XD If anyone is willing to *cough* translate, PM me :P |

Seriously though, when I first saw Fairy Tail I thought this was a manga done by Oda-sensei until I saw the giant letters "Hiro Mashima Returns." Overall, I really liked the first chapter, it was very well done even though I couldn't understand a lick of it, it still grabbed my attention...... mainly cause he looks like freakin Luffy!!! I couldn't resist!!! By the way, I think that square chin guy was about to brand the girl or something, maybe to show that she's his property now, I hope someone translates soon, please!!! Also did anyone else notice that on page 3, the girl behind the blue hair guy resembles Robin greatly. Not that that's a bad thing cause Robin's freakin hawt!!! |
I found in a site that Mashima Hiro did touch up work on Oda's One Piece. I think that's mainly the reason why there are similarities between the two.

Just as you said - Ulteia is Robin-chan Lucy is the prototype of Nami in the one-shot manga for one-piece ;) If you look closer you can find more. However - that's even better for me. have read the first chapter translated by KEFI, looks like very interesting, the use of "mages" can we worked out greate. Also some nice fights. I will be following this manga for a while ......

I find it sort of interesting that his old main character was named Haru (spring) and the new one's named Natsu (summer). Probably a little pun for no reason or something.
Edit: Both names are in katakana, not kanji, so they don't necessarily mean the seasons, but Mashima Hiro revealed in some volume notes that Haru's name was meant to be "spring" with a foreign feeling to it, so... |

I very much enjoyed the 2nd chapter as well! A pretty unusual route to introduce the entire secondary cast so soon isn't it? And a very interesting cast at that, I believe I enjoyed Grey the most, at least from a comical perspective. Though watching this whole world through the eyes of the unsuspecting Lucy is one of the manga's big charms right now. (Pun intended. :D)

Anyone still reading this? I just brushed through the third chapter last night, and it was quite funny, though it's still a bit hard to see where the story might be going. Of course, as always in a shounen manga, the first few chapters could be seen as introductory. Go Tauros! Mooo!

Haha, having read the fourth chapter, this manga really cracks me up. :D I really think Mashima Hiro hit the target spot on so far (for a shounen), judging from my own tastes. Well after four chapters, it's very promising at least.

Poor.. Lucy getting rejected, Though I like how she said it "Its Not that, It's just that his Sense of Beauty is kinda Retarded!!" :heh: This chapter sets things for a encounter next time and I Guess we will also find out who the two guys in the Shadow are. The manga is Interesting so far. Dont know what they will do with the story but so far the short adventures are Great! Never wached/Read One Piece though seen pictures around and its similar. |
Anybody still reading this? It's gotten up to chapter 20 and it's starting to get really good. Some of Erza and Gray's magic has been revealed as well as more of Natsu's.

I think I'm up to 19, and while it's enjoyable, it's hard to get a feel for the actual storyline... What's driving the characters? Right now it feels like it's just one mini adventure after another...

And someone already noted that Hiro also helped out Oda with OP back in it's early chapters. But to be fair, both artists come to their own around the sames time as RAVE and OP both serialize around the same time except OP turns out to be a world-wide mega-hit and is breaking records left and right while RAVE is only a very popular series that really didn't make it over beyond Asian boarder...... There really isn't a main storyline YET, so far concept is simple, It is a story about a Socerors' Guild, and that is what you do in a guild; you hang around with other members, look for a posted job, goes and do the jobs, than collects you money. I personally think this is one the the charm of the series. Besides there isn't even a villian in the series yet with exeception of the Darkness Guild that Ersa was working on. SayanMk's spoiler is mis-leading, so far Jiikurein and Ulteia are only revealed as part of the Soceror's Council that hadles all inter-guild affairs. In fact, the council was going to punish Fairy Tail guild for their careless-mistakes but Jiikurein put in good words for them that stating that while FT is a wild bunch, they are also a group with many talented sorcerors in the first chapter. |
I'm up to chapter 19 myself... and though i never was able to really get into rave, i'm really getting into this series, i really do hope it goes well

Man... I was really fooled by the name of this manga. I thought it was shoujo type manga or something like that. Never knew it was from the autor of Rave.

I need to go read chapter 32. Anyway, this series seem to have quite a few plotholes. Its really a shame. =(

Currently up to chapter 25, and I have to say I like it. Good characters and story, though it's not really plot driven but it's still enjoyable. Natsu is hilarious, I like his relationship with Erza's best.
However, I just couldn't let these out of my head: - Natsu - Luffy - Gray - Zorro - Loki - Sanji - Lucy - Nami - Erza/ the black haired girl - Robin - Happy - Chopper - etc, I mean, when I see Natsu and his attitude, basically I saw Luffy....... Awesome series nonetheless though. :) |
Does the scanslation still use 'Erza'? Her name is right there in the manga as Elsa (can be seen at the betting station when she's about to fight Natsu).

Erza Scarlet sounds better :P
edit: and Mashima first spelled it as "Erza". (when Mirajane writes her name with the magic pen) So it's anyone's guess which is the correct spelling since even the mangaka can't be consistent. |
