I have a question about the Durarara light novel. (Or dhurarara, however you want to spell it).
THREAD CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FROM THE NOVEL: View at your own risk
Spoiler:
Is Mikado really the leader of the Dollars? I got spoiled but don't really believe it. Is this true?

Yes and no.
Spoiler for Book 1:
As of the current anime episode (which is 4), he is not the leader of DOLLARS, but he will be.

Could anyone with some knowledge of the novels enlighten us spoiler-seeking people with perhaps a summary of the major events in novel so far?

Hmm, full spoilers for 1-3, read at your own risk. Been a while since I've read it, and some details are different from the anime. Since it's a msytery novel, it's kinda hard to summarize the major events without telling you what other things happened, I'll just give you a run down of book 1.
Spoiler for Book1:
Mikado arrives in Ike at Kida's invitation.
Mika gets seriously injured by Seiji for super-stalking him, she also saw a head without a body in his room.
Seiji's sister is in controlled of a lab that belongs to a major pharmaceutical company, who was in possession of the head due to Shinra's father's help (or was it Shinra who gave it to them, I forgot).
Seiji fell in love with the head since he first saw it, so he stole it and kept it in his room.
Namie, Seiji's sister, has heavy brother complex, she convinced Mika to get plastic surgery with an added scar on her neck to trick Seiji to fall in love with her (this is after Seiji seriously injured Mika and he himself thought he killed her).
Mika ran away from Namie (I forgot why), and bumped into Mikado, who housed her for the night.
DOLLARS was a rumor gang that was started by Mikado when he was bored in his home and during the period when Kida ignored him (more on this later). Basically a bunch of them in the chatroom just started posting on random message board, quoting DOLLARS for everything that happened in Ike, and say they are a super strong gang.
DOLLARS only has one website, as long as you want to join, you can join, there are no rules. Once you join, you gain access to the gang's webpage etc., but nobody knows who each other is.
Mikado went home, saw Mika disappeared, Namie's goons showed up, Izaya and Celty chased them away. We don't know if Izaya was originally part of that said chatroom that helped spread the rumors in the first place. It is unlikely because he wasn't even sure Mikado was the leader until the end. Though it is true he went to Ike just to bump into Mikado.
Mikado started figuring things out and wanted to help Mika. He told Namie to meet him in the middle of Ike (I forgot something here again, he has some kind of evidence but I don't remember what). Namie went to meet him, hoping to have him return the girl to her through brute force with her goons. Secretly, Mikado organized the first ever DOLLARS gang meeting. At that point when negotiation broke down, Mikado sent a text, "The people who are not currently holding your cellphone are our enemy." At this point, he crossed the line and made DOLLARS into a real gang and he became its first leader (This was an incredible badass moment in the novel).
It is worth noting Izaya, Shizuo, Celty, Kida, and Otaku Group are all DOLLARS members.
Celty charged down the side of a building and knocked out the goons, but Namie ran away in the confusion (she thought she can find the head).
Turns out that Erika and them caught one of the kidnappers in the beginning because the person they kidnapped is their friend (THIS SEEM TO BE TOTALLY DIFFERENT IN THE ANIME). The kidnappers was hired by Namie to get subjects for the experiments in her lab. Erika and them were able to take Mika away moments before Mikado got home and find Mika missing.
Seiji at this point, went up to the the van and just took Mika away. Mika went with him willingly. Others were surprised and tried to stop him, but Mika spilled the beans. Seiji decides to fall in love with her until he finds the real head.
Celty then somehow finds out that Shinra was responsible for her missing head (again I don't remember the details). She went straight home and question Shinra, who made a beautiful speech and convince her that he really loves her. She reciprocated his love.
Namie in the meanwhile took the head to Izaya, who really was the mastermind of the whole thing, and started working as his assistant.
Chat room members are Mikado, Izaya, and Celty.
I'll do book 2 and 3 later (or someone else can do it...). I don't know 4 and onward except more casts show up (Izaya's twin sisters, Shizuo's younger brother, and the Russian mafia started having a more active role etc.) since the books aren't available online ...

I found this on Durarara!! LJ and it apparently contains excepts and spoilers from vol 1-3 and some of 4 with a timeline that goes from vol 1-3.
I haven't look at myself since I'm avoiding spoilers, but for those interested:

Ok thanks. :D It was getting a bit confusing without that answer.
But is Kida...
Spoiler:
The leader of the yellow flag gang yet?

Anybody know the real difference between the Yellow flags and Yellow scarves from the novel?
In Ep 5 Kida confronts three members of the Yellow scarves (What happened to the flags?)

I thought it's just translation differences and they're the same group.

So according to the spoiler :
Spoiler for question:
Celty found that Shinra is the one who's hiding her head which she's searching for 20 years, but instead of getting angry and leave him, she falls in love instead? That seems.... strange. And about shinra, is he really just kind man with a dirty job who hide /Celty's head just becuz he afraid to lose her like how the anime portrayed himself so far? Or he's actually some kind of evil person who plan the whole hiding her head things for another reason?"

Spoiler for heaad:
As far I remember, the current holder of Celty's head is Izaya and Namie. I don't know whether Shinra knows the heads whereabouts or not.

Ok I have enough figured out now. What I am curious about is there some sort of supernatural powers involving shadows as seen so prominently in the ED and throughout? Like are the main characters going to develop some sort of shadow powers?

Holy balls guys!!!! Ruri Hijiribe made an appearance in episode 6!!!!!
Spoiler for Her identity:
She is a halfblood of Dullahan and human. Shizuo's brother is her partner in the company she works for. She is actually a serial killer nicknamed Hollywood.
I wonder if this means that the anime will at least go to volume 4. In that case we also see the huge cast of members in volume 4 as well.

If Baccano! managed to squish 5 books into 16 episodes, I don't see why they couldn't do that with 26 episodes...

The manga is way more intense and more insane than the anime.
Episode 7 of the anime was ridiculous. I don't know how the original (light novel) is.
But i am starting to prefer the manga over the anime!

Because I keep forgetting it has more episodes T___T, and the anime sequence's merging a lot of stuff together.
Spoiler for Rio:
Like Rio, who is supposed to appear in volume 6 of the novel and is the girlfriend of the head of another major organization, but she appeared so early.
EDIT: Wonder if we can turn this into a lightnovel AND manga thread, so we can talk about the manga here too (since so far it's really faithful to the light novel).
