Music-Related Anime?

Hello! I'm a huge fan of music. I won't say all types, but I do like metal and punk a lot, and most of their sub genres, as well as a few electronic genres, like Drum and Bass. Anyways, I'm looking for music related animes/manga. I'm not sure how to describe what I'm looking for, though. I liked K-On!, but not for the music-element of it. I want to read Detroit Metal City, but I haven't gotten around to it. So, don't consider me picky or anything. If it music plays a big role in the anime, I'd love to see it. Thanks!

Oh, and manga/light novels are fine too. Thanks!

Sora no Woto: Amazing Grace plays a big role XD.
Symphogear: Yes, they sing to use attacks XD
Idolmaster: They sing.

Seconding IDOLM@STER.

Kimidori 2012-03-26 00:55

Third IDOLM@STER.

Thanks. I'll put them on my ever growing list :D

Edit: Seems like IDOLM@STER is popular. I'll watch that one first.

I strongly recommend Beck. The art style is unusual (characteristic of the director) and it stops partway through the manga, but I think it's very good and the music side of it is excellent.

You might also want to consider the new Spring series Sekamichi no Apollon, though the music in question will be jazz. Very strong pedigree with this one.

I 2nd Beck. It's a bit old, but it's quite the enjoyable classic. Should be right up your alley.

I'd also recommend Nodame Cantabile, but it's music is classical in nature, so I dunno if that would salivate your tastes.

Full Moon. A great idol story.

Seconding Nodame Cantabile. Also, try La Corda D'Oro ~Primo Passo~.

Beck is just right, with a lot of references and shoutouts to all eras of rock music, as well as being great in focusing on some of the technical aspects.

But as far as the next season is concerned, apart from the well-regarded Idolmaster TV series, there are two competing idol-based shows to be aired within next month, one of them which combines fighting action (throwing bombs, beating off riot cops, and piloting mechs) and singing sequences, comedy and drama; and the other looks to be a typical slice-of-life depiction of high-school idol life.

However, as a period piece (1960s) based from a manga, Apollon has some possible great punch to deliver, what with great sound and normal-looking character designs.

Try Sayonara, Piano Sonata, a music-themed light novel. Adapted into manga.
Shinkyoku Kokai Polyphonica
Seconding Symphogear

Idolm@ster is similar to K-ON.

Beck are really good series with more serious animation and story.

Okay, Beck actually looks a lot better than IDOLM@STER, so I'm going to watch that one first. My biggest problem with it though is that it has something like 34 tankoubon volumes, which is waaaay too many for me to buy, haha. Does Beck has Omnibus volumes or something similar? Thanks for all the suggestions, too.

Macross Frontier - Love triangles, space battles, and lots of twist and turns that makes you want to keep watching.

Obelisk ze Tormentor 2012-03-27 06:59

Woot, Beck is already mentioned. Yeah, that’s a good one right there (both anime & manga).

I’ll throw an odd suggestion here as somebody already mentioned Macross Frontier. If you like Rock Band, you might wanna watch Macross 7. I can say that 75% of that anime is about rock music of the main protagonists/band.

I will also add Lemon Angel Project : looks similar to Idolm@ster except it is underrated. Despite this, it has lot of good idol moments.
