i am hoping HNG's dominance so far will backfire on them when they go up against stronger characters.

I think I seen enough of that last year with Hinagiku. I can only see Hina and maybe Nagi getting far from the Hayate series (Block final or Final 8).

Edit: Unless the split votes causes trouble between Yuuki and Nodoka/Mihoko.

Takei Hisa, Segawa Izumi and Uiharu Kazari. All three are strong enough that they should have advanced to Round 2. Some of them are even strong enough to make a run at making Round 3. This match is something we should be seeing in Round 2 not Round 1. Uiharu should have the edge to win the match. I felt her preliminary was a little better than the other two and Uiharu has the advantage of Kuroko being in the other match today. Kuroko should stomp her opponents. I'd like to see Tsuruya do better but it won't happen.

I'm curious. Who are those other characters that made cameo appearances and didn't fare well in Saimoe?

I forgot how badly Haruhi did in 2008. Haruhi still advanced through first preliminaries in 2008 so I don't think she'll have problems making the main bracket (even if it has to be by second preliminaries). Unless she draws an easy group, winning a match may be tough, though. Since she's actually called on by name, maybe she'll get more support since her appearence may be interpreted as actually being her rather than just a look alike like most other cameos.

Currently Uiharu and Hisa are fiercely battling for the position to challenge Maria's spot in the top 8. Personally I'm rooting for Hisa all the way, BUCHOU~ SHOW US YOUR HELL WAIT!
