Captain Harlock Sci-Fi Anime's Remake to Open This Fall

Writer Harutoshi Fukui (Mobile Suit Gundam UC novels, live-action Bōkoku no Aegis) reconstructed the story to reflect the themes of modern society, and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) is directing with the latest filmmaking technology. According to the news source Oricon, this film has Toei Animation's highest production budget ever at the equivalent of over 30 million U.S. dollars.

Toei Animation had initially planned to release the 3D remakes of Space Pirate Captain Harlock and its robot anime series Daikuu Maryuu Gaiking in 2012.

Not entirely sure what to think anymore. The Captain and canon never get along anyway, so he could be anywhere....anywhen.

Though Tochiro is still dead I asssume. Since he is in most versions unless the Captain is rather young.

Also the Arcadia is a lot different. Looks like a mix of the original, the second, and the Yamato from Yamato 2520 (gun arrangement only).

I never seen the show, but is this a sequel or something?

With Captain Harlock...you can't tell. It could be a reboot, a near sequel, and alterate universe, an ancestor, a desendant. Could be a lot of things given that Matsumoto really doesn't care about continuity. The last major Harlock series was Endless Odyssey, which was almost a sequel to the original 1970s series...but it was also not, because following a timeline is not for manly people like Harlock.

There have been many attempts to make a unified timeline for the various series: Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Endless Orbit SSX Harlock Saga, Endless Odyssey, Galaxy Express 999, Queen Emeraldas, Galaxy Railways, and Cosmo Warrior Zero, which all have Harlock in them. It never works out correctly unless one is more fluid with the nature of time than others. There are even attempts to include Gun Frontier and Space Battleship Yamato in the timeline with Interstella 5555.

First what I assume is a speculative version of Yamato if Harlock and Tochiro rebuilt a Gamilas warship to become the first space battleship Arcadia.

The second is a more interesting take based on Yamato 2199. With the elder Kodai (Captain of the Yukikaze) as Pirate Captain Harlock and the Gamilas pilot Dietz as Emeraldas.

The movie looks better with every new trailer/teaser. I hope they will leave out the godawful music from this trailer though.

If it is anything like the live action Yamato movie, that music will be the song for the ending credits.
