Here's the OP sequence that was played in the end of the first episode:

|
I guess it's Utena but without all the thought-provoking themes. Symbolism comes across as pretentious in a show like this. Production values look decent but it's not enough to carry the show.
|
Although I got the gist of the first episode, I wonder what the girls are fighting for anyway since they're not just joining a famous acting troupe?

This is probably my most anticipated Summer 2018 watch. I felt that the promotions for this were very good, and it looked very promising to me.
Well, Episode 1 isn't really what I was expecting. I was basically expecting Love Live, drama club style. On the whole, it's probably closer to Revolutionary Girl Utena, as Kazu-kun mentioned. On the whole, it's a pretty wild and eclectic mix. I found Episode 1 a bit confusing, but also highly entertaining overall. I get the impression that Revue Starlight is aiming pretty high, given its eclectic mix of elements. And its audiovisuals are very well-done overall. So this could be a very good show. ...or it could be overly ambitious, and crash and burn. :heh: Time will tell! Either way, this should be a memorable watch for me. And it is kinda refreshing to see anime try a truly unusual mix of elements, and in so doing, try to break some molds. We'll see if it works out or not. I mostly like Karen's character so far, so that's good. And I'm looking forward to learning more about Hikari. |

Well, the first episode completely threw me through a loop after the elevator scene. It's like a confusing mix of Mahou Shoujo, Utena, Yurikuma Arashi, Kannazuki no Miko and maybe AKB0048 blended into one (which makes sense since I heard the director worked with the director of Yurikuma). The talking giraffe part and the sewing machine transformation was weird, and now I'm just royally confused by the show :eyespin:. |
What the whatting what on a what-stick.
|
Well, that was quite magnificently barking. In a good way. I was expecting some kind of Takarazuka themed school idol show, and while that's what it seemed I was getting, things got strange. In a good way.
But it sure does wear its influences on its sleeve! |

What will make or break this show is whether all this symbolism actually means something or is just style with no substance. Right now it looks like the latter to me, to be honest. On top of that the protagonist looks like one of those OP mary sues that can beat everyone easily. That's also not a good sign. |
Watched episode 1:
Hmm, this surpprised me in a good way. I like the animation style. :) And just what kind of role are they auditioning for?? |

There might be a similar dynamic here, but with Karen/Hikari I get the vibe that Hikari is the more impressive right now. |

Hiyori was herself a jobber for all intents and purposes. :heh:
Also, there's Mahiru as Mai Yanase, and Futaba Isurugi and Kaoruko Hanayagi as Maki and Suzuka. This is basically the reason why I'm considering picking this one up. There's so much similarities between the characters and their interactions. |

I found it interesting that Hikari became pretty upset at Karen at the very end there. Maybe Karen ruined Hikari's big "tragic hero" moment? In any event, I'm curious to find out why exactly Hikari was upset there (and it's notable that Hikari wasn't the only one that seemed displeased at Karen's sudden appearance at the end there). We're early enough in this show that I'm not sure how we should take the more fantastical moments. Heck, Lukes YGO & WS on YT seems to be approaching them as just literal dreams, which is possible going by this lone episode. I kinda doubt they're just dreams, but I'm not sure I'd rule it out already. Anyway, Hikari was certainly given the classic star transfer student treatment, and was wowing people early on with her jumps and overall athleticism/style. And for what it's worth, Karen's seiyu is a total newcomer while Hikari's seiyu is Suzuko Mimori of Love Live and Yuuki Yuuna fame (and an extensive resume in general). |
