Episode 1:

I noticed a question characters ask so far in the show is "why do I play badminton?" I guess this series is going explore the life journey of characters.

This episode was cool. It has solid animation and it didn't waste time to showcase what badminton is about.

There's competitive energy that can be felt easily in the story already. The OP song is also really stylistic so far. I think in terms of animation quality, the show gave me a solid impression. There's also potential from the main cast so far. The season will likely explore their own personal growth competitively and mentally.

There's actually a lot more characters that appeared so I really hope the anime will make room to give most of them some spotlight. Riko actually has my attention the most so far.

Oh and of course, I'm looking forward to Ayano's development.

The overall quality of the anime itself is definitely one of the better shows I've seen this year at the moment. Hope they can maintain that.

I think one of the producers said that the anime received a "substantial amount of investment", I wonder if the fact that the women's team won the gold medal in the Olympics has influenced the production of this anime.

Just watched ep 1. Visually, it's impressive. Some of the motions and biomechanics of the shots were portrayed well. Audio of the different shots (smash, clear, drop) also matched up too. It's been a while since I read the manga, so I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of drama and emotions the first episode showed us.

And what a first episode it was! In 24 minutes, we get a great intro to the main cast, supporting cast that actually aren't background filler (even the tennis scenes played into the story), some light comedy (teacher/supervisor and "future criminal"), mature/gratuitous scenes of the girls (not over the top ecchi), and a glimpse of the monster player that Hanesaki was/is (those eyes! O_O). No closing song, but loved the credits being played while the anime still went on.

Overall, 9/10 for a first episode for me. Will it match up to Ping Pong's level of story telling? I look forward to finding out!!!

Side question to those who follow badminton: In the first scene, the score was 21-0. Has this ever occurred in a professional match? I've seen single digit scorelines of 21-5 or 21-6, and usually it's someone like Lee Chong Wei vs another pro, but wondering if that scoreline has ever been achieved in the modern era of badminton.

This is... intense.

The animation was so good I didn't even ogle the girls.

grecefar 2018-07-01 18:57

Spoiler for ep1:

Visually the episode was strong.

Although on the other hand I was left sick of the jerk Captain regardless of her crying scene near the end. And I was also left feeling sorry for the prodigy who is basically being bullied into playing when she doesn't want to. Sure if you have talent and want to do something then go nuts. But what is the point of her having to take part in this match when she doesn't want to? Because someone in the club feels really passionate about badminton. Well great the sport has meaning for her, but that shouldn't matter to the prodigy girl in question.

Good looking episode. But geeze that was heavy and didn't exactly do much to endear me to the cast. I related most to the third year that quit half way through the episode being sick and tired of the abuse the team captain was unleashing on everyone.

Iffy start, but it has potential.

i agree about everything being "too forced here", the main girl forcing her frustrations into others, the talented girl already have a lot of pyschological problem to be worked, i really don't liked this "drama" on that episode" while the visual was really "amazing" like on kyoto animations levels and above the story/plot feel too forced with unreasonable peopes forcing they owns into others, it looked like almost like a "episode about bulling", i really, really don't liked it, really the things where "too forced".

I went in expecting a generic sports anime and that's what I got, BUT there is something a little more about it. I'll give it a couple episodes to see if it pulls something good

topboy 2018-07-02 08:14

21-0... Did you ever play badminton?

bakato 2018-07-02 08:57

I played a little casual in high school gym. It felt so unrewarding. You hit as hard as you can and it still moves so slowly.

Panzercracker 2018-07-02 10:05

The anime turn Nagisa into a sore loser who throw the anger to everyone. Also the story building that Elena drag Ayano to the badminton club is just forcefull and not as good as manga.

The characters came across as dicks at times but since they are presented as regular highschoolers and not as arch-typical moe highschoolers so I can forgive it. I didn't find it that melodramatic. The main girl(?) from the start gave off the impression of someone who trained her body a lot(those quads) for the sport and lost in a humiliating way. For something she's so passionate about, I can see why it broke her so badly. She is also young and even older people can be irrational.
It is annoying they forced the crazy eyed girl back into it despite her protests. She clearly has some trauma/disinterest but in these shows it always get disregarded because plot demands it. I can't remember the names yet but I'm interested to see more. Plus that animation is incredible.
