Let's see:

-She's rich
-She acts nice
-Her smiles can be suspicious sometimes

Hmm......

I'm still waiting to see her yan side.

About her character the correct word is "deceiving".

The question is: Who is she deceiving? The character in the series or the audience watching the series?

Her character is character is interesting and there are chances of seeing her all freaked when her wish is about to be granted until someone turns against her be it Madoka or Sayaka.

ChronoReverse 2011-01-17 01:19

Maybe she's just a little bit insane because her family somehow got removed due to her becoming a magical girl (wild guess since they're so pointedly missing compared to Madoka's). That smile she wears isn't natural.

NorthernFallout 2011-01-17 03:29

The first time she appeared, I figured she'd probably be my favorite character. You can't really go wrong with DAT smile. Now it's merely a waiting game for my delicious yan Mami~~

Just off live stream of ep3:

Well, ladies and gents, I guess this thread is going to be "cut" short.

ChronoReverse 2011-01-20 12:44

Comment "trimmed" until the episode is subbed.

What, precisely, was the point of featuring her character in the preview art as much as they did if this was going to happen three episodes in? Besides just tricking us into thinking this wouldn't happen so soon, of course.

To be fair, all the magazine featured were happy and colorful pictures.

Yet the very opening of the first episode, what do we get? Complete darkness.

orion 2011-01-20 20:57

And Madoka crying in the OP lots of times.

No revival needed. On to the redhead.

The only magical girl that should be allowed to revive is Sailor Moon.

Asterisk 2011-01-20 23:00

Looks like Mami...got ahead of herself.

CrowKenobi 2011-01-20 23:02

All right, that's enough. We don't need to make light of Mami's death any more... it's getting to be too maudlin... :nono:

Fishbait 2011-01-20 23:23

Well, Mami's unfortunate demise can only mean two things.

1. It's the final push Madoka needed to become a magical girl. She agrees to the contract right away and wish for Mami's revival.

2. It frightens Madoka and destroys her previous determination. She no longer wants to become a magical girl, and will need important plot events to help her regain her determination.

Whether Mami comes back normal....or as a witch.....is anybody's guess....

jeroz 2011-01-21 01:05

considering that Ga rei Zero
Spoiler:
in ep1, I don't find this ep3 stuff that surprising.

I'm now waiting to see her being revived, only in the form of a crawling flesh or a floating head

FlareKnight 2011-01-21 02:04

Might be crazy, but I'm just hoping first for a revival and second for a normal revival. Things have gotten traumatizing enough for Madoka that bringing back Mami in some messed up way would be overkill this early. Clearly the goal is to make Madoka have a contract, no need to immediately betray that. Of course this is all assuming that Madoka makes such a wish in the first place.

Can't really joke on this since that's not a fun way to go.

Clarste 2011-01-21 02:20

Well, that was an interesting character arc. Acting all suspiciously friendly for the first two episodes, getting lots of character development in the third, and then dying without dignity. While on one hand you could say her death cuts her character discussion short, on the other hand it makes it even easier because she's no longer quite so mysterious. Well, unless she gets revived, in which case all bets are off. Love live zombie-Mami!

Anyway, I just felt like reconciling her opposing images. On one hand she clearly has the role of tempting Madoka and Sayaka into a fate which is surely horrible. She comes to them as a friend, and she's certainly friendly. She treats them to cake in her house, acts as the responsible senpai, and shows off for them in battle. It's clear that she wants them to eventually become magical girls. And well, that's a bad thing, as clearly indicated by what happened to her in the end. Is she the snake offering the poisoned fruit?

However, before she dies we see her backstory. She almost died in a car crash, only surviving because of her wish. However, her parents died and now she's trapped in a life where she has no time for friends or love because she's forced to constantly risk her life in battle. Is this a life worth living? Or is she just living out of stubbornness? Furthermore, when Madoka promises to join her as a magical girl, her facade appears to break and she cries with joy at the thought of finally having someone else in her life. While this could be good acting, it could also easily be her true self. And therein lies the answer.

Mami was trying to trick the girls into accepting a terrible contract with a terrible price. She was sneaky and suspicious. But why? Not because wanted to kill them or turn them into witches to get more grief seed or anything horrific like that, but simply because she wanted friends. It was the only way she could ever possibly get friends in her current, aimless living-for-the-sake-of-living life. While she did truly want them to join her, she also knew it was a bad thing to do and so encouraged them to truly think about what they wanted. She was drawn in two directions: on one she wanted to protect her new friends, and on the other hand she wanted to keep them. If they chose to abandon the whole thing, surely they'd abandon her too? And then she'd be alone with the witches again. For the rest of her life, her life that was worth everything to her.

And then, once she finally realizes and receives her true wish, the wish she would have wished for if she'd realized it back then, she loses the very thing she had ironically wasted her contractual wish on.
