Would that be a manga version?

I guessing that it would have to be set after the series but before Endless Waltz.

Based on AboutGundamWing.com's timeline, Blind Target takes place during Spring AC196 and Battlefield of Pacifists take place in Summer AC196. So I'm guessing that the serialization would take place in the fall.

Deacon Blues 2010-06-23 15:11

wingzerosnuggles, you've got some glaring issues with your initial post. I'll clarify.

First, Yoshiyuki Tomino does not consider Gundam Ace canon. Canon is not even a Japanese word. Even if he did consider it official, his word means nothing. Sunrise has more or less mandated that if it isn't animated (a la series, movie or OVA), then it isn't official. There are varying degrees of "gray" that manga and games fall in, but for the most part they aren't recognized as official.

Second, Newtype and Gundam ACE are two separate publications. Ngee Khiong mislabeled the Gundam Wing pages as coming from Newtype when they are from Gundam Ace.

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-23 16:35

Oops, sorry. Goes to show how accurate Wikipedia is. @_@

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gundam_Ace

That's where I got the bit about Tomino:

Gundam Ace is considered canon by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino.

But thankies for the correction!

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-23 16:38

Washu: I don't think so. mike_s_6 mentioned that Dorothy's ESUN president:

http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost...postcount=5358

ESUN is definitely a post-EW thing.

Deacon Blues 2010-06-23 19:24

The Earth Sphere Unified Nation was formed at the end of the television series. In Endless Waltz, we see the President and his grand daughter taking talking about Mariemaia and what not.

Interesting to hear that the original project was scrapped. Apparently it was going to have some viewpoints of Treize and what not.

New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop
  • There are going to be new mobile suits appearing in the novel. Focus will be on their militaristic nature.
  • The era is called "MC-0022 NEXT WINTER".
  • The novel takes place on Mars.
  • The story takes off from the viewpoint of Sally Po's daughter, Kathy Po. (Rank is 准佐!?)
  • She's affiliated with Preventer. A subordinate of WuFei (Mars Branch Chief).
  • She possesses a microchip sent from Earth Sphere Unified Nation President Dorothy T. Catalonia.
  • She believes it contains information to initiate "Operation Mythos".
  • However, Chang WuFei instructed her to download three files aside from the memory chip from a history bank.
  • Kathy doesn't understand what good previous century's data will be.
  • The file was recorded in the summer and autumn of AC195 and the spring of AC196.
  • The only common entry the files have is the keyword: "Gundam pilots".
  • The Summer AC195 file is believed to have been something wrote by Treize.
  • Rilke's "Autumn" is quoted at the beginning and after two lines "That is my eternal friend, Milliardo Peacecraft" was added, but was then crossed out with a line in the end. The contents are like a short essay or a letter.
  • It is summarized with "I must be a loser to change history" and is signed "TK".
  • The next file is Autumn AC195 in which transfer student "Duo Maxwell" reads an essay on the theme of the relations between the Earth and its colonies.
  • The final file is Spring AC196. The recorder is Kathy's mother, Sally.
  • Data on conversation between Relena and an elderly person are on the file.
  • The file contains other attached data aside from the sound.
  • It's the blueprints and operations manual for "frozen capsules for artificial hibernation".
  • The blueprints are signed "J".
  • When she arrived at the Preventer's Mars Arctic Base (north pole), Kathy went straight to Master Chang (WuFei), who resides there alone.
  • She informs of being handed down the authorization of "Operation Mythos" and suggests the awakening of the Aurora Princess.
  • The "sleeping beauty" is sealed in a frozen capsule for artificial hibernation.
  • A voice is heard behind Kathy, "You're just like your mother."
  • Appearing was a middle aged man in black priests clothes with a young boy with long hair tied in a braid.
  • The middle-aged man who appeared at random was nothing but smiles. "I'm Father Maxwell. The Father Maxwell who may run and hide, but never tells a lie. And this brat with the unpleasant eyes is my son, Duo."
  • The priest brings special attention to Kathy, "By the way, I do hope that you brought three files with you. The three preludes are needed to awaken the Aurora Princess."

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-23 20:38

Ah right...forgot about that. Relena was VFM during Episode 49.

And whoa... since Kathy's carrying the Po surname and is Wufei's subordinate, I'm assuming Wufei's not the baby daddy. Well, that's one ship sunk. xD

Also, Dorothy's middle initial is T? *immediately thought of Tiberius as in James Tiberius Kirk*

Looking forward to what that mysterious data is.

Deacon Blues 2010-06-23 21:39

I've updated with the remaining information I've found on the net.

Meehlimo 2010-06-23 22:25

so is this cannon or not? just to be clear.

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-23 23:39

Thank you so much Deacon Blues!

I know Autumn AC195 pertains to that time Heero masqueraded as Duo at a school.
Relena and elderly people?
So Heero becoming a popsicle was Dr. J's plan?
WTF?! Is Heero the Sleeping Beauty? I wonder how he'd feel about being called "Aurora Princess." Seriously, Sumisawa... T_T Or is the "Aurora Princess" referring to Relena? *shrugs*
And did Duo really become a priest? OMG, is Hilde the baby mama to that boy?! Typical of him to name the kid after himself. xD *evilly hopes this permanently sinks 1x2 canon theorists*

Meehlimo: I'm guessing it's about as canon as all the other sidestories (Blind Target, Battlefield of Pacifists, The Last Outpost, etc.) Semi-canon, I guess. The only sidestory that got canon status was Episode Zero since it's a prequel (also by Katsuyuki Sumisawa who's writing Frozen Teardrop and head writer for the TV series) that was meant to be animated but something went awry and we ended up with two recap episodes instead (27: The Locus of Victory and Defeat and 28: Passing Destinies).

Deacon Blues 2010-06-24 00:41

Unless it's a joke, there is no mentioning of Heero being the one that was frozen.

Lugia_Tsuyu 2010-06-24 00:42

Maybe it's Relena?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Only question is why. Did she get sick or something? Froze her until a cure's ready? And why Dr. J's chamber designs? Did Heero have something to do with it? Ah...speculation.

Washu-Chan 2010-06-24 02:42

I'm prolly guessing that'll follow either the OAV/Movie Endless Waltz or the manga adaptation. I'm leaning towards the latter.

That would totally be interesting...not to mention the drama!!! Wow!

...But I doubt it...=_='

RAVNEN 2010-06-24 04:20

"Frozen capsule" could be use when travelling to Mars, considering Mars were pretty much far..far...away from Earth. If the story take place at Mars, that means Zech would be there..(as Zech goes to Mars with his girlfriend...)

Rising Dragon 2010-06-24 04:28

That's it!

Zechs is the Aurora Princess.

*shot*

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-24 17:20

Lugia: Well, you never know. After all, Sumisawa was also a scriptwriter on both Yakitate!! Japan and Inu-Yasha: The Final Act. Both Sunrise projects thought the former is a comedy and the latter is shounen with romance. That might have influenced his writing.

RAVNEN: At the end of EW, we saw Zechs and Noin in a shuttlecraft though. No capsule usage for them.

Rising Dragon: At this point, anything's possible. xD

The "(?)" was in the first summary itself, which has been changed now to the longer one you see in the website. So maybe it was just the guess of the reader that it was Heero, based on things we don't know. Personally, until we get the original novel, all the summaries should have the usual disclaimer.

Ah ok, thanks for the clarification. :) A lot's still unclear. Like Duo, for example. I don't think Sumisawa's oblivious enough not to know that priest's can't have kids. Then again, it's mentioned that Duo "didn't make the sign at all." I'm guessing the "sign" is either the sign of the cross or the fact that he's not wearing a cross? Either way, I suppose Duo's masquerading.

EDIT: I'm editing the first post to state that all summaries are not final or to be taken as 100% accurate. Thus, they should be taken with a shaker of salt. ;)

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-25 02:38

Alternative kouryakukan translation by kaijyuu_m here:

Link!

From her translation, these caught my eye from the Sumisawa interview:

He's writing this series as an experiment while thinking of things such as how to revive "something that has already fully concluded once", and "why sequels are so hard to get right". So this isn't really a true sequel, but a transitional novel to help develop a successful sequel.

And this is also meant to be a work to bring Gundam W to the level of completion of the "First Gundam " (<-- "First Gundam" means UC Gundam)

Serialization starts in this month's issue. This issue features the prologue. About the generation of the children of Heero, Duo, etc.

OMG, they're trying to expand GW into the same level of hugeness (meaning number of stories, sequels and whatnot) as UC. @_@ And wtf, is this hinting that Heero has a kid, too? Did he finally let Relena tap that? xD

Well, could be it...although a sleep capsule like other space sci-fi could be usefull for the crew.(i guess Tallgeese cockpit is enough for Zech..:p)

Let hope they do that...after all Gundam Wing has huge fanbase at U.S. & Bandai can spew more GWing gunpla...XD.

Deacon Blues 2010-06-25 13:14

Hm... 准佐 certainly isn't Constable. It's a bizarre rank that falls between Lieutenant and Lieutenant Commander, given the ranking system of Gundam Wing.

Am I the only have who thinks this is like some bad fanfiction?

We'll see how the show is executed but part of me feels that way. I love GW and am glad the AC universe is being expanded after so long but I'm a little disappointed with the direction.

The novel could still turn out to be darn good though.

I'm hoping those fools get shut up too. There's nothing wrong with wishing for something to be true but trying to twist a series so it fits your own views is just foolish.

Blind Target and Battlefield of Pacifists are canon in my opinion.

Revolutionist 2010-06-25 23:50

Sounds good to me, more Gundam Wing can never be a bad thing.

Washu-Chan 2010-06-26 00:02

Based on the reaction that I've read on the /m/ board, it looks like they're afraid that they might turn Relena into Lacus circa GSD, with the "Aurora Princess" thing, that is, if she is that.

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-26 04:32

Elo: True that. I mean I love the idea of Quatre/Dorothy but I don't go around forcing people to see things my way by twisting scenes in the series to reflect my views. Fanon is fanon. All the yaoi is fanon.

I <3 Blind Target but I classify all the interquels as semi-canon. Akemi Omode wrote BT brilliantly though. She developed it all so well.

Washu: Relena > Lacus

IMO, I cannot see Relena ever turning into God-mode Sue. That would suck ass.

This has never made sense, in fact, I'd argue the whole 'Relena Suecraft' thing was made fun of within the series itself. Everyone in the series seems to think Relena is this 'perfect pacifist princess' thing. Only Treize and herself knew otherwise.

Fact is, for all her pacifist preaching, it's really nothing more than a political front out of necessity. She had never cared that her colleagues secretly harboured a defense force within Sankt Kingdom, and she was perfectly okay when Treize took over command during the White Fang's rebellion, despite it going against the whole 'Perfect Pacifism' crap she and her late father spewed. If anything, she advocates fighting for the sake of peace.

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-26 06:26

True that. Actually, calling Relena a Mary Sue has mostly been done by people who:
1. Don't understand her character.
2. Are looking for an excuse to hate her because "OMG! Heero and Duo are tru luvz 4ever, trufax."
3. Both.

Basically, she stood for what made sense and just stuck to her guns on the pacifism because, as you pointed out, it was necessary. In EW, she urged people to fight. Again, she did what was necessary. Doing what is right and not what is easy does not a Mary Sue make.

After watching SEED, I would say that SEED!Lacus is similiar to EW!Relena, though a little more assertive. Destiny!Lacus, based on what I've read, is when her character was ruined. We can blame the Japanese fans for that.

Agreed on all counts. I picked up Blind Target at a convention a year ago and really enjoyed it. Not only was it written well but the artwork was just as good in my opinion.

The reason I consider it canon is because unlike Ground Zero and Tiel's Impulse, it had series staff-writers working on it and there aren't plot points that contradict with the series.

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-26 14:18

Elo: Especially loved how it featured that (in)famous kiss that drove the yaoi fandom nuts. Hate how it was more of an "almost" kiss though. -_-

As for the novel, I do wonder how Heero/Relena have progressed, if they did. *sighs* It would have been so much easier if the scene on Libra went down something like this:

EDIT: Official or mock-up? @_@

The artists must have been chuckling as they drew up that panel knowing how it would affect the fan base.

I'm interested in the state of Heero and Relena's relationship too. I'm also interested to see if the creators actually give Heero a job or if he's just coasting through life. So many questions...

That video is pretty funny.

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-27 03:33

Elo: Yeah, it sorta befuddled both sides.

The 1x2 camp were like: Well, it's just "almost." *denial phase*
The 1xR camp were like: Almost?! WTF? Why not go all the way? *folds page*

Basically, it left neither side satisfied but wasn't rage fuel either.

Yeah, as a shipper, I'm really curious about what happened to Heero. He must have gotten a job or something...

And thankies. I dunno but I can't help but dub audio from True Blood onto GW. *has done it twice before*

Rising Dragon 2010-06-27 03:59

I believe the Gundam Wing manga stated or implied that Heero became Relena's official bodyguard after the Mariemaia incident.

wingzerosnuggles 2010-06-27 04:11

Rising Dragon: Yes, that was the Endless Waltz manga ending with art by Koichi Tokita. It's stated in the credits page that Sumisawa also wrote this.

This is the ending I subscribe to in head!canon due to the heavy shipping potential. Wonder if this is the one Sumisawa's drawing from? Or is he going with either the OVA or movie one?
