Question about RAR

Sorry if this has been posted before, but is there a free program anywhere that allows me to decompress RAR files? Thanks for any help.

NightWish 2004-06-02 18:37

A search for ".rar" gave up this thread about rar files... among others; however you could have just used google -- it would have given you a link to a site that might help.

TronDD 2004-06-02 18:55

I use Winrar. It bitches about registering but it doesn't stop working.

.rar is a form of compression, similar to .zip only better compressed. You can get the WinRAR decompression tool at http://www.rarlab.com/.

And for future reference, the correct place to post this is in the Tech Support section. :)

Ok, thanks.

What are the features of WINrar ??

Prince of Chronics 2004-12-16 23:29

The features are listed on their website... imo as a general user, it's not that much better than Winzip...

Here's an easy way. Go to Krunch:

You'll see 3 or four options to choose from. Choose the second option: "upload + unkrunch". Krunch is on on-line compression/decompression site that can handle ZIP, RAR, TAR.GZ for both compressing and uncompressing any archive.

Once it has uploaded and decompressed your RAR file, you'll be given a temp directory where you can download your files from.

http://i12.tinypic.com/2wmma91.png

Just click on the links to download. You have 24 hours to download the contents of your RAR archive after which, they delete everything and wipe the disc clean. Of course if you need to, you can re-do it all again.

Hope that helps. Cheers.

There is also an added advantage of using WinRar it can open Winzip filrs ( .zip ) also . You can use it for unzipping winrar and winzip file formats .

Actually I think the video file is in rared format so you unrar it first then watch it with required codec

Compressing anime series with winrar?

Well through the 6-7 years being an anime fan my collection of anime series is getting outrageously huge filling up 1 250 gb hard drive and almost halfway into my new one lol. So coming up with ways to go about this compressing the series into a rar file came into mind. My question is if I compress a whole series usually around 4 gb's will the anime lose any quality and maybe i should mention that the anime video format's in .mkv

I don't want to have to resort to deleting some of my anime titles. T_T

GHDpro 2007-01-24 13:08

Compressing anime or any other data with WinRAR (or ZIP, 7zip etc) will not cause any data loss. These formats are frequently used to distribute software for example, and it would be really bad if executable files got mangled.

However, you should realize that most fansubs are already rather efficiently compressed using DivX/XviD/H264 video and MP3/AAC/AC3 audio. This means that it's likely you'll only gain a few megabytes per file if you're lucky.

Now say you manage to save 5 Mb per file. On say 20 fansubs of 175 Mb each that means you save 100 Mb on a total of 3.5 Gb. That are not exactly great savings...

I recommend either:
1) deleting the stuff you have watched, don't want to watch again or give to a friend
2) burn to DVD data discs (if you're lucky you can fit a 26 ep series on 1 disc)
3) Buy an external HD and move all series you don't need instantly to that disc
