Violet Evergarden

Kyoani just released a teaser video about an anime adaptation of Violet Evergarden that's "in the works".

Violet Evergarden is a light novel series written by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase. It is known for being the winning the Grand Prize in the 5th Kyoto Animation Award.

I’m Violet Evergarden, the Auto Memories Doll who will
rush to provide service anywhere you wish.

That translucent voice comes from a robotic beautiful girl with blonde hair and blue eyes like she came out of a storybook.

Personally, cautious anticipation. That trailer was absolutely gorgeous, and the material looks like it could be something a bit more mature in the veins of Hyouka. (Hah, I know, we said that for KnK as well.)

Here's a bit of extra synopsis on the anime website that I didn't see in the OP (translated by anon):
Quote:

Violet Evergarden is an "Auto Memories Doll," a robot made to help those who cannot write put their thoughts on paper. Throughout her life, Violet meets many people and connects many hearts together through their letters to one another. Though her time with each person is short, the bonds formed during her time with them will not easily be forgotten.
This makes it sound like an episodic fantasy series, sort of like how Kino's Journey is structured.

Somebody posted this on youtube:

Director: Taichi Ishidate (Beyond the Boundary)
Series Composition: Reiko Yoshida (Koe no Katachi)
Character Designer: Akiko Takase
Sound Director: Youta Tsuruoka (he doesn't do the music by the way)

They picked the lesser of the three directors from Kyoani to do direct the show since the other two are busy with the Sound! Euphonium movies. I'm a bit worry about this. At least it will look pretty for sure.

This might be a first.
"Violet Snow" has been released in English, Korean, French and Chinese in the KyoAni official Youtube channel.

The Chinese version was performed in a lower key.
The English version (which different from the Japanese version which was sung in English by a Japanese singer) was performed by Kate Higgins, the English voice actress of C.C. from Code Geass.

Netflix seem to be getting the message about delayed anime releases. In the UK, at least!

ANN: The Kyoto Animation series Violet Evergarden is listed on Netflix (here) as beginning in the UK on January 11.

Visually this first episode was gorgeous, the movement, the backgrounds, and designs are something that we can always expect from kyoani (there are some QUALITY moments tho).

Now when it comes to how they're adapting the story... I'm not so sure this was a good desition. For a series so incredibly shilled and hyped I expected something more faithful and since Kyoani's record with their "changes" is incredibly bad I'm not getting good vibes from the first episode. The flashbacks can be a way to introduce more focus on Violet tho, so maybe these changes can be something good after all.

Still I have hopes for this and the series will be one that I'll keep following, especially for Violet.

Ep.1

Surely, this is not a show that everyone will enjoy watching. You will either manage to sink yourself into the story and enjoy it or you will find it boring.

The way KyoAni adapted the first episode seems to focus on show some of her background as quick as possible to attract as many viewers as possible compared to doing an in medias res.

They give just a taste of her background and that's a hook to fish many new viewers, some maybe new to anime in general.

The way the story is told in the novel gives KyoAni a lot of freedom to expand on it in their anime adaption.
