There is only one official canon Tenchi Muyo universe, but there are various spin-offs that are unrelated to it.
Here is a website I STRONGLY recommend for more info.
(Warning! There are spoilers!)

To follow on from what you've seen, you should watch "Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ouki" OVAs ep 1-20.

"Tenchi Muyo! Ro-ouki" is the full name of the original series. It was released episode by episode, and has breaks in between. "Tenchi Muyo! GXP" was the official side story set in the same universe, set a few years down the track.

The release style between the Japanese and US releases are different. There is effectively three separate seasons between ep 1~ep20, because the original director (and creator) left in season 2, only to come back to do season three.

That's why episode 8~13 had a slightly different flavour. Some would say it was lower in quality...

But that's quite relevant to the US and other Western buyers, because the Western release of Tenchi Muyou Ryo-ouki was unrelated to it. The Western release has the first 2 seasons, episodes 1 to episode 13, spread over 4 DVDs. (Called "Tenchi Muyo OVA" in the US)

Episode 14-20 is eventially released, after many years of waiting, and is sold as a separate product in the US. It would end up in 3 DVDs of its own. (not yet completed) (Called "Tenchi Muyo Ryo-ouki" in the US)

So... To answer your question...
USA Tench Muyo is OVA series 1 and 2
USA Tenchi Muyo Ro-ouki is OVA series 3.

But they are all called Tenchi Muyo Ryo-ouki in Japan.

Tenchi Universe is an okay spin-off, but don't take it too seriously.

One thing you might notice with all the unrelated spin-offs, is that the characters get powered down. Many of the original people can flatten civilizations by themselves, and even have access to death-star level firepower. Like in the real world with nukes everywhere, the people in Tenchi Muyo use diplomacy rather than death rays to resolve matters.

But in order to cheapen it down to a simple action series, they get nerfed and become both weaker and dumber for the non-canon stories. This applies to the movies as well. If the "villains" of the movies or Universe/Tokyo were to confront the OVA characters, the villains won't survive five minutes of combat against any of them. Yes, that includes Sasami or Mihoshi.
(In GXP, Sasami is the little girl in Tenchi's house who does the cooking. Mihoshi is the dumb-looking daughter of the blond lady who keeps teleporting to random places with her broom in hand.)
