Director Makoto Shinkai (Voices of a Distant Star, The Garden of Words, 5 Centimeters Per Second) revealed on Thursday that he is directing a new film titled Kimi no Na wa. (your name.) that will open in Japan in August 2016.
Plot Summary:
Quote:

The "story of miracles and love" revolves around Mitsuha and Taki. Mitsuha is a female high school student who lives in a rural town nestled deep in the mountains. Her father is the mayor and isn't at home much, and she lives with her elementary school-aged little sister and her grandmother. Mitsuha has an honest personality, but she doesn't like the customs of her family's Shinto shrine, nor does she like her father participating in an election campaign. She laments that she lives in a confined rural town, and yearns for the wonderful lifestyle of living in Tokyo. Taki is a male high school student who lives in central Tokyo. He spends time with his friends, works part-time at an Italian restaurant, and is interested in architecture and fine arts. One day, Mitsuha has a dream where she is a young man. Taki also has a dream where he is a female high school student in a town in the mountains that he has never been to. What is the secret to their dreams of personal experience?
Coming in August 2016.
The film will be called 'Kimi no Na wa. (your name.)'

I hope it's not a film about isolation and detachment. but knowing the director, it probably will be.

So where do I sign up? Haven't been let down yet and Garden of Words was probably the most visually amazing of them all so far :)

welp, gonna be good

Infinite Zenith 2015-02-22 11:57

I'm excited and anticipating a moving, highly detailed movie :)

Overhead bridge with distant city landscape. Now if there was a trademark Makoto Shinkai shot, this or the train station would be it.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm legit excited; next to Hosada he's probably my favorite modern director.

Looks like Shinjuku to me. Which would be a repeat, actually.

yay makoto shinkai. i don't think he's hit the storytelling high of Byousoku with his recent works. Garden was more visually stunning (probably the most visual stunning movie.. that rain!) i don't think it had the story chops of byousoku.

either way, greatly anticipating this now.

In some ways I think the story in Garden of Words was a bit more tight than that in 5cm per second even if it didn't have that something that elevated the latter to brilliance. His movies are getting technically better at telling the stories but technical quality isn't everything that makes up a good story, it needs to also have a bit of flair as well and I think that Garden of Words didn't quite had enough of it. But that's just my opinion though.

Great sky as usual... :heh:

Who is the seiyuu?

Infinite Zenith 2015-12-10 08:24

At least we have a date now. So, a BD release will be February 2017, then?

MeoTwister5 2015-12-10 08:40

Did I just hear HanaKana in there or am I high again?

Whatever it is, I'm in.

Dextro 2015-12-10 16:14

I can already feel the tears getting ready to fall out of my eyes after that trailer. Looks gorgeous as usual, the soundtrack is spot on and the VA work feels great as well. Bring it on! I just can't get enough Makoto Shinkai :D

You are. Main Heroine is voiced by some film actress while MC will be voiced by the guy who voiced Summer Wars MC.

Are we sure the MC is the guy and not the girl?
