Interesting, I thought they'd adapt the other Mew Mew Au Lait manga (the one with the female lead and magical boys).

It's because of the anniversary

I've got nothing against a good Shojo magical girls remake :).

Looks like the new Tokyo Mew Mew will be called Tokyo Mew Mew New. Coming in 2022.

Been a while since I thought about this franchise. Could be fun :).

Oh god the new designs are AWFUL

Spoiler:

THEY DON'T EVEN LOOK LIKE THE SAME CHARACTER.:bash:

Did the designer forget how to 'shoujo'!? New Ichigo looks like she'd be in some shounen harem ecchi show or something!!

I. Hate. This.

I think the designer just thought "Hmm, for the men!" :heh:
Not an ounce of shoujo in the design

I have no issue with the character design, especially if they wanted to make the action better. The coloring though.

In manga and 2002 anime, its the coloring that distinguish their persona.
Its legit for civilians to think Ichigo and Zakuro are someone else, because the hairstyle and striking contrast (spiky dark red -> wavy bright pink and black -> purple).
If the difference is minor like this (see Ichigo chibi and Ichigo in screenshot), the charm is ... gone as, well, the story using color to represent characters trait and changes.

:(

Agreed. Outside of the coloring I think she looks better. But, I've never been a fan of anime eyes that take up half the face.

Heh? How are action and character design even related?

She doesn't. She looks so generic now like she could be from ANY show nowadays. The unique look has been destroyed and turned bland. This is Art Devolution.

Allow me to introduce you to this strange and bizarre concept known as an "opinion." I like the new designs.

Simpler character design = easier to animate the character's action

That has been one of the most fundamental concept of handdrawn animation since the history of animation itself.

If that were the case, then the designer would have left Lettuce's outfit as it is instead of going the modest route for her. :p

Maybe if you're talking about the facial designs. The outfits, on the other hand, is a different story.

Personally, some of the outfit updates lack the practicality of the original versions. The two main cases in point:

1. Mew Pudding. Making her outfit similar to Mint's doesn't work when you consider that she's the acrobatic, tomboyish member of the team.

2. Mew Lettuce. While I can understand her updated look being more modest given how the show's target audience will likely be little girls, I'm not sure if it works as effectively as the showgirl leotard outfit from the original series when it comes to
Spoiler for Tokyo Mew Mew:

I didn't say you couldn't like them. (what DO you even like about them though?)

I'm speaking from an artist's POV. The character art is a downgrade. It doesn't stand out anymore. It looks like every single other anime that has 'colorful' characters in it now. I think if we asked a bunch of other artists "which is better; which image pops out at you more?", they'd choose the original one too.

The original design is no less simple than the new one. The main difference is bigger eyes, smaller face, and brighter colors. That's really it. Should not affect the action whatsoever.

Spoiler for Tokyo Mew Mew:

The outfit is fair game to me, because 4 of 5 are good.

Ichigo and Mint got fixes that necessary in case they do more action.
Retatsu and Zakuro got some semblance to starting trio which is good to identify they're a team; no issue with Retatsu transformation as her skirt already give the idea.

I agree that Hu Ling is the real problem. She's the athletic girl of the group and making her got same outfit with Mint felt like a miss.

However if they're on same picture I can see they're drawing idea from modern tokusatsu, particularly the one where the main group is trio.
Something like Power Ranger Dino Thunder / Abaranger that the trio is standardized while the other two are "additional members", Black and White respectively, which in this case is Retatsu and Zakuro.

You better see the new transformed design then.
Ichigo not using OG mini skirt is a blessing for animator if they wanted her to do more movements.
Mint also similar, her OG skirt is a big no for possible leg movement if they do increase the action compare to OG.

In manga and 2002 anime, they can get pass because part with significant movements shared between Hu Ling, Retatsu and Zakuro.
So if Mint and Ichigo join the fray in this new direction, some changes have to be done. Simpler faces and more facilitating outfit is a plus.
