Korean Films

since there wasnt a discussion on this, i will start it off by saying that Korean Movies are getting better and better over the years.
recently a movie called Taegukki Hwe-Naal ri meou.
( AKA Taeguki: Brotherhood of War)
showed on american theaters. I was stunned that an actually korean movie
came through the american market.
and this movie is so great, its a must see.
other good movies are; My Sassy Girl as some of you might already know, and there are ALOT of gangster comedy movies, so try one of them and see if you like it.

You are deadset right sunshine.

Taegukki is an absolutely sensational film.

Shiro MS08th 2004-10-13 23:53

I don't really watch lotsa of Korean movies compared to Japan ones, so just some recommendation.

Romance:
My Sassy Girl
Windstruck

Action:
Shiri

Comedy:
My Wife Is A Gangster
Oh Brother

OldBoy and No Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance were GREAT, GREAT just... mind disturbing movies.

Arahan was a wonderful kung fu action comedy.

Korean movies are certainly stepping up on the good scale.

Cz 2004-10-14 01:27

I have not seen a lot of Korean movies, but My Sassy Girl has to be the best so far. :D I think the only other one I have seen is Spy Girl.

ramune 2004-10-14 02:01

Everyone has watched My Sassy Girl...

I've only watched a lot of Korean romance movies since I thought it was the only genre Korean movies are good at (with all those cute girls!!! :p)

So can anyone recommend some good Korean movies that are not romance? Preferably action. (besides the ones that have been mentioned)

When and where did Taegukki play? I was really looking forward to seeing it in American theatres.. :( Oh well. Apparently I missed the screening of Hero (which isn't Korean obviously) too, so my luck with foreign films certainly isn't very high...
Either way, I'll be watching Taegukki on DVD with my friend for a seminar-type project we'll be doing, so eh.

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance is one of my top five films ever.

Swiri is a big name thriller that's had some degree of distribution and promotion in the west and it's not bad, but I believe it's a little overrated. A better example is JSA (Gongdong gyeongbi guyeok). At the moment, the recent release Oldboy is riding high in the IMDB top 250 and looks like it's definitely worth a viewing.

Taeguki: Brotherhood of War. American Dvd version is coming soon
Dolryuchagi (AKA spin kick) i saw this one since it seemed interesting. its about bunch of low-lifes are going into a TaeKwonDo club and its one of the small selection of Sports/Comedy/Drama. Personally i liked it, but many people might not.

Heh. I just saw My Sassy Girl for the first time today. Great movie. I'll have to look into the other titles mentioned here.

Phantom Blade 2004-10-14 18:18

Where can i get unlicensced korean movies? especially the ones mentioned here like my sassy grl

babbito2k 2004-10-14 18:45

Sex is Zero is a rather broad comedy.

Attack the Gas Station goes over-the-top with a robbery plot.

Barking Dogs Never Bite plays on a certain unusual culinary taste. Bleak and funny.

edit: Just watched Brother. It took its damn time but ultimately told an interesting story about young brats growing up and eventually becoming gangsters. Some impressive violence scattered here and there.

Sex is Zero is funny but as the title suggest, 18 and Up. but im sure people dont care.

Attack the Gas Station sounds so interesting, but i never got to watching it.

donno bout 3rd one.
theres a new movie called Ba-Ram Ui Pa-E-Tuh. (Fighter of the Wind)
its action film about a korean guy going around japan, beating the top martial artists.
heard its based on a true story, and as a Martial Art Movie Fan, i will be checking it out.

oh and if you like My Sassy Girl, try Windstruck its done by same director and has Jun-Ji-Hyeon. ^^

actually dont watch Ba-Ram Ui Pa-E-Tuh. (Fighter of the Wind) if you get offended easily, because it kinda shows the "bad sides" of japan....
and the movie is fricking 60 percent japanese!! i dont get whats going on.

Shiro MS08th 2004-10-14 20:45

Oh yeah JSA.
Quite a good war theme movie too, remember watching on cable.

Swiri? Was that Shiri in America? Cause I saw that, and I didn't see the big deal, other then it being a really international type movie. But yes, JSA was truely an awsome, awsome film. Even though you knew what was going to happen, you prayed it didn't, and when it did, it just brought a tear to your eye. The last scene of the film is possibly one of the greatest endings ever, it still hits me sometimes... great movie.

Oldboy was brought to the US thanks to Quintin Taretino (sp?) at the Cannes Film Festival, but uhhh... they kept thinking he directed it, and kept giving Quintin all this directoral praise. :uhoh:

Yeah, I just checked and you're right. In the US it was named 'Shiri' instead, which is rather odd, as it's not as if Americans aren't going to be able to pronounce Swiri... You're right, it's nothing amazing, though I think it's not bad as thrillers of that kind go. Plus I thought the male lead was a good actor.

I agree with you on JSA too. At first I thought the mystery was great, and as you put the puzzle together everyone becomes quite a tragic victim of circumstance.
