it could be 3ivx is trying to run those XivD avi's (which it should run fine unless it was encoded with xvid 1.0 beta2... I don't know why, but just doesn't like it...)

codecs (packs) really don't hurt a pc... other things do... (ie. connecting your ipod to your pc before installing the drivers for it could messed winxp... which it did happen for me... :( )

I don't have any problem using ffdshow (unless you mess with the options) but I don't like how the new version of XivD [beta2] waste a lot of the CPU cycles on my pc... I would use 3ivx to run...
