I thought there was something official at some point about why Kyon chose "John Smith", like an interview or a character book or something. I forgot exactly what it was though.

I don't think that'd really work, since "John" and "Joan" are pretty much said the same way in Japanese. That'd be pretty confusing.
And "Mary Smith" sounds pretty good to me, but I don't know how...

As far as I know, there's no clear consensus yet. But at this point, we're using "Jane Smith." (But I'd rather have "Jane Doe", personally.)
