Remember that the first season had a lot of side story episodes interleaved in it. When it came to the big plot, it took about six episodes per light novel to get through them in S1 and Second Raid....

I wouldn't read too much from that; HK comes up with some pretty cool looking designs so they get used a lot whenever "badass looking gun" is needed. The MP5 is 45 years old and you still see it...

They are not all closed. As part of their bankruptcy they closed a bunch, and I don't honestly expect them to be around this time next year, but there are plenty of Borders stores still around.
