Personally, I won't worry too much on skipping, the beauty of anime is that if you do miss something, you'll be remind of it by the way of flashbacks.

My suggestion is to just follow manga, but dove in anime if you are particularly fond of certain stories, just to see it from anime perspective, since anime usually have some sort of "fill-the-blank"...
