Considering it is a particular "mode" of Raising Heart (Device Mode, Excelion Mode, etc) then I would say it is (a) optional and (b) can't be combined with other modes.

I was quite happy with this ep. I agree with others that it's a bit weird just how much they showed of Nanoha's past. But, I guess it's one of those things we shouldn't think too deeply about.

If some mage/whatever beat Nanoha, then why does Vita look fine? I don't think the situation could have ended like that if it was due to a fair fight.

For the scene to properly tie into the events...
