They're just trying to recreate the graphic style of the Canvas Engine. And yeah, I'll agree that it wasn't done all that well.

The graphics in the game really made it look like brush strokes...

You might want to look into FE10 and the one coming out for the DS as well. Both lets you save and reload from any point in the mission...
