These builds for Ubuntu are quite old. 2.1.8-release is r4064. The official and (mostly) statically linked builds exist for a reason. If they don't work, come back to me. :)

I wasn't able to reproduce it - looked fine (like in MPlayer). Make sure to use an up to date VLC version, ASS/SSA only started to be usable with 1.0.2.

VLC 1.0.3+ has decent ASS/SSA rendering. Can you describe your problem and provide the script and comparison screenshots? Maybe it's a problem with libass or the script rather than VLC.
