I liked Rideback, Dennou Coil, Kekkaishi, and Aishiteru ze Baby, which had pretty good characterization and a good story line although some are more serious than others.

Ookiku Furikabutte for sure, you may want to try Touch which is definitely sports related, but also a bit slower and older and has some emotional aspects. You may also like Hikaru no Go.
