So, I decided to buy an iPad air. With the episodes and players that I've tried, iMedia Player comes the closest to smooth playback of 10bit 1080p files, and it's much better than AV Player.

Regardless of the merits of 10-bit, it does have much higher requirements for playback, which limits the devices on which it will work... so I've been running into the issue of wanting to play...
