Background: Hikaru von Lieben is the only child of Rabbi Jakob von Lieben and Naomi Shimamura. Hikaru grew up happily, and was recruited into the TSAB at age 15 (his parents were under the pretense of it being an elite boarding school). He got good grades, and was pretty much an average student. At some point in time he met Miria Hasser, whose stubborn, no-nonsense personality clashed with Hikaru’s own laid-back, carefree attitude. The two did not get along for quite a while. At a later point in time, something occurred that involved both Hikaru and Miria (the details are still unknown), and the two became close friends. The two have shared a steady friendship ever since (unbeknownst to either of them, the entirety of Section Six is placing bets on when they’ll become a legitimate couple. The bookie in charge of the bets is Doppelganger).
Not much of Hikaru’s past is notable. He lived in Germany, and went to Japan often. The reason he is well known is because of his current affiliation with Section 6 as the prime member of the Riot Squad, and his extremely unusual device, Doppelganger (who is a character in his own right). Hikaru is normally seen working with Nanoha Takamichi’s Stars team along with Miria.
Doppelganger is unique in many aspects. One is that he can copy other devices and transform into them. Five devices are currently in storage; Graf Eisen, Levatine, Mach Caliber, Cross Mirage, and Flame Braver. Doppelganger is also sentient, to the point of conversation. But he’s a jerk, so people tend to stay away.
Not much is known about the reasons behind Dopp’s (as he’s called) actions. Nobody knows why Dopp is an excellent singer with a penchant for Queen.
-Dopp has five slots near the cartridge entrance. Each slot has a chip in it, for a total of five chips. When a device is copied, the data is imprinted onto a chip.
-Dopp can make more chips (one every other day). Ever since he started to crack pregnancy jokes, no one has tried to figure out how he does it.
-Hikaru usually has at least one blank chip inserted into Dopp, meaning that Dopp has enough room to copy one new form a battle.
-When Hikaru wants to change the devices, he has to revert to standard mode. This later becomes unnecessary after Hikaru unlocks Dopp’s second form, Doppelganger Geist, which lets him change from one device to another without going back to standard.
-Doppelganger copies the weapon and barrier jacket. For example, if Hikaru uses Graf Eisen, his jacket will change into a ‘male’ version of Vita’s outfit. If the user of the copied device is already male, then the copied jacket will look the same. This is not done when Mugen is being used, as Hikaru creates a weapon that functions like the copied device, but looks different from the original.
-Dopp can copy devices with the power outputs of Bardiche and Raising Heart, but he cannot store them. If Dopp has five other forms already downloaded (in other words, no blank chips), he cannot copy them. This later becomes unnecessary after Hikaru unlocks Dopp’s third and final form, Doppelganger Mugen, which allows him to access all the devices he has ever copied at will.
-Devices on the scale of Reinforce cannot be copied.
-The Copy Shot takes one cartridge to activate. Once Geist is unlocked, no cartridges are required.
-When transformed, Hikaru and Dopp gain the abilities of the copied device, but none of the skill or power of the real user. For instance, if Dopp copies Raising Heart, Hikaru CAN use Starlight Breaker, but it will be NOWHERE near as awesome or powerful as the real thing. In fact, it’s rather pathetic (Dopp himself said so).
-To make up for that, Hikaru undergoes weapon training for each corresponding weapon copied. After he copied Levantine, Signum made him undergo swordsmanship training.
-Also, Hikaru tends to improvise in battle, using the powers of the devices that he’s copied in unorthodox ways. Known attacks involve slamming Graf Eisen’s Missile form into the ground to cause an earthquake, riding Strada like a broomstick, and sticking Levantine into the ground and switching to Snake form (like Ivy from Soul Calibur).
-Hikaru is fluent in Japanese, Hebrew, German, and English.
-Hikaru is an excellent philosophical thinker. If he thinks for too long, he will lose track of his surroundings, however.
-Hikaru owns a copy of the Torah. No one has ever seen him actually read it, but he used it to whack Doppelganger once. He also uses it to flatten papers.
-Doppelganger is the first device to: get drunk; start a drunken brawl; attempt to incite other devices to begin a revolution; hit on a human; hit on another device; drive a device to jealousy; win a singing contest; act as a bookie (this list is not yet finished).
-The “Mugen” in Dopp’s last form is the Japanese word for “infinity”, referring to the seemingly limitless potential that the form possesses. Oddly enough, “Mugen” is a reference to the “Mugen David”, the six-pointed star that represents Judaism, Hikaru’s religion. This is just a coincidence, however eerie it may be.
