Installing programs in Linux is the easiest thing in the world. You just type the name of the program into the package manager and it automatically downloads and installs. And there is pretty much an open source version of every app and utility you can think of.

I run Mandrake and Debian. I'll agree that Mandrake is the probably the best for beginers.
