I stepped forward... and hurdled over one gate, landing square in the path of the train.

I had no chance to react. It would perhaps be three seconds, maybe less, until I was no longer a part of this world.

Then I realized I still wasn't really giving it my all. So I did.

That's a great line. Realizing that you haven't done your best when you put yourself into the path of certain death.
