Well in my Earth Science Faculty we typically use high end commercial receivers during our field work, and we still have to take into account the 3+ meter margin error.

When we need more precise coordinates, we generally use other surveying techniques, provided that we have a well defined referential.

Maybe access to the future Galileo system will change this.
