As For Bernkastel. She's really not a very tragic character to me. She's shown to enjoy creating tragic situations and when those situations are already there she aims to make them worse. Sure she was trapped in a logic error once, similar to how Battler was, but that doesn't make her a twisted or tragic character. A tragic character to me is someone who gives you a reason to sympathize with them for some kind of victim circumstance. In episode 6 Battler accomplished that. Bern, however, doesn't give anyone any reason to feel sympathy for her at all. I don't get the impression that she'd even want any.

However in Bern's case I enjoy her for it. She lovably twisted instead of being pathetically tragic. Which I think makes her unique.

Spoiler for Bernkastel and Higurashi:

I say she's tragic, because we do have motivation to feel bad for her. I present all of the Higurashi, and everything she had to go through, up until the point where her mind would have broken by the end of it, as the reason she is the way she is now. It's true she does terrible things, but I think as a villain, she is tragic because you can completely trace her character progression up until she's where she is now, back to when she really was just an innocent 9 year girl.
