He said he intends to go back to the forest after the tournament, if he lost. Meaning he doesn't have any intention of going back to the Academy really. In addition, there's no way he could get rid of Est's curse if he loses either, and if he wins, he does get rid of the curse, there's no clash with going back to the forest.
