There was a lot to not like about that first episode, but not giving any context to his angst as you say was the biggest deal breaker for me...

Instead of caring about why he was so miserable it just made him come off as a whiny emo bitch to be completely honest. Still I can see how this could have been interesting so I'll take a gander at the Manga. The anime however? Bleh drop.
